Avengers: Infinity War is known as one of the most ambitious crossovers and one of the biggest events in the recent history of cinema. It assembled almost all the major characters that the audience has met through 10 years and 18 MCU movies that were released prior. However, one of the major characters who took no part in the movie itself was Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury, although the character appeared in the movie’s post-credit scene, which also teased the introduction of a new powerful MCU hero. We witnessed that Fury sent a signal and called that new hero at the last second before he turned to dust as a result of Thanos’ snap. So, who did Nick Fury call for help at the end of Avengers: Infinity War?

Seeing that Thanos’ snap is taking effect all over, Nick Fury takes the pager to send a distress call to an unknown individual. After he disintegrated as a result of the snap, the pager showed an emblem of Captain Marvel, foreshadowing an upcoming MCU movie of the same name with Brie Larson in the title role, which introduced the character and eventually set up a stage for her appearance in Avengers: Endgame.

Back when the entire MCU fanbase waited for Avengers: Infinity War, it was already announced that Brie Larson would join the MCU soon and be there for the final battle against Thanos. For the time being, it was suspected that she would debut as the character in Infinity War before her solo movie (just like Black Panther and Spider-Man were introduced in Captain America: Civil War before their solo movies), but ultimately it was decided that the character will be introduced in her own prequel movie set in the 90s, and then she’d eventually join the Avengers in Round 2 against Thanos.

Why it took so long to introduce Captain Marvel to the MCU?

The Marvel Cinematic Universe introduced a whole roster of characters during the Infinity Saga, and now they’re doing the same to prepare the stage for the next big crossover event. What can’t be denied is how the Infinity Saga had the perfect timing to introduce the characters that are necessary for the further development of the story, and at the same time, we have seen almost all the Infinity Stones before Avengers: Infinity War. While some fans are still overthinking why Nick Fury didn’t call Captain Marvel when Chitauri attacked New York or when Ultron attacked Sokovia, that is just something we’ll need to make peace with because it was written that way.

The original Captain Marvel movie was released in 2019, between Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. The movie takes place in the 90s, featuring Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers and Samuel L. Jackson’s digitally de-aged Nick Fury during his early days at SHIELD. The movie also introduced Skrulls to the MCU, and they’re also set to have a huge role in the upcoming Disney+ series Secret Invasion. One more thing that sets this movie apart from other MCU movies is a ton of references to the 90s (like Blockbuster and CRT computer monitors), which definitely caused some nostalgia in fans that grew up in that time.

The movie showed us how the Tesseract, the Space Stone, played its part in turning the United States Air Force pilot Carol Danvers into a superhero when she absorbed the Tesseract’s power, ultimately becoming Captain Marvel. The movie also showed us how Nick Fury lost his eye, which was kinda anticlimactic, but we appreciate the effort. Like Doctor Strange, Captain Marvel needed her solo movie to show her origin story and explain her character to the wider audience before joining the Avengers.

The original Captain Marvel was released less than two months before the premiere of Avengers: Endgame. Although it received a lukewarm response from the audience, the movie still grossed over one billion dollars, which showed how the fans wanted to be maximally prepared for the climax of the Infinity Saga in Avengers: Endgame. Captain Marvel didn’t have a huge role in Endgame, but she still appeared in the right place at the right time when she obliterated Thanos’ warship Sanctuary II. She also fought against Thanos one on one, but although she’s one of the most powerful characters the MCU ever introduced, she was still no match for the Power Stone.

Why, Oh Why Didn’t Nick Fury Use Captain Marvel’s Pager Earlier

When talking about rewatching the entire MCU, fans still debate whether it is better to watch MCU movies by release date by the chronology of events. If we’d watch the movies chronologically, Captain Marvel would be the second movie to watch (after Captain America: The First Avenger, which takes place during World War II). However, one of the cons of watching the MCU chronologically is that there’s no need to know about Captain Marvel so early in the franchise, so that’s why the MCU waited for the right moment to introduce the character even though her origin story happened long before Tony Stark became Iron Man and Captain America was waken up from the ice.

What is next for Captain Marvel and Nick Fury in the MCU?

Both Captain Marvel and Nick Fury are still active on the MCU’s roster of characters. It’s not a surprise for Captain Marvel, but we gotta admit that a few years ago, we wouldn’t say that Samuel L. Jackson would still be up to play Nick Fury. Jackson first joined the MCU in the post-credit scene of the original Iron Man movie in 2008, and therefore he’s the longest-running MCU actor ever. Samuel L. Jackson is set to have a major role as Nick Fury in the upcoming Disney+ series Secret Invasion this year, and he’ll also reprise the role in The Marvels, the sequel to the original Captain Marvel, which is set to be released in November 2023.

Brie Larson reportedly signed a contract for seven movies when she signed for the role of Captain Marvel in 2016. So far, she has appeared in the original Captain Marvel movie, Avengers: Endgame, the mid-credit scene of Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, and the last episode of the Ms. Marvel Disney+ series. She is now set to reprise the role in The Marvels this year alongside WandaVision star Teyonah Parris and Ms. Marvel star Iman Vellani. While this remains to be confirmed, it is expected that Captain Marvel will have a huge role in the upcoming crossover movies Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars.

Directed by Nia DaCosta, The Marvels is set to be released on November 10, 2023.
