We know that DC Comics loves retcons and changes to their characters, but Marvel Comics isn’t different. Besides the usual change of the characters who will carry the mantle of a superhero, Marvel changed the backstories and origins of many characters. For example, Wolverine’s origin story is very confusing today – one needs to go and check his biography every few months. However, one change in the two characters’ lineage greatly impacted their stories – Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver. This article will discuss who is Scarlet Witch’s and Quicksilver’s father.

Even though Magneto was a supposed father of “wonder twins,” Marvel Comics revised the idea and ensured that Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver were children of a nomadic Romani witch named Natalya and an unknown father. The witch passed the care of her children to her brother Django Maximoff and his wife, Marya. For decades, Wanda and Pietro thought they were children of Magneto, but the retcon that occurred in ‘AXIS’ comic book from 2015, established that Wanda and Pietro are children of Maximoffs.

The biological father of Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver is still unknown, but it is established that they are of Romani descent, born in Eastern Europe, and raised by their uncle and aunt, Django and Marya Maximoff. If you’re interested, stay with us until the end.

Is Scarlet Witch Magneto’s daughter?

Let’s establish something immediately – is Magneto the father of the Maximoff twins? Well, it was thought that he actually was for decades. Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver first appeared in ‘X-Men’ #4 in January 1964, where they were introduced as the villains and the founding members of the Brotherhood of Mutants.

However, both siblings joined the Avengers in 1965 and became part allies and antagonists to the superheroes since then. Their origin story was quite clear – it was established that they were children of unknown parents that were eventually taken by High Evolutionary and experimented on in Wundagore Mountain in Transia.

In the 1970s, Marvel decides to establish Wanda and Pietro as the children of Golden Age superheroes – Whizzer and Miss America. However, the end of the same decades establishes they are offsprings of the Romani couple, Django and Marya Maximoff.

In 1982, specifically in ‘The Vision and the Scarlet Witch’ comic book run, we discover that Magneto, the leader of the Brotherhood of Mutants, is the father of the Maximoff twins.

This was a huge reveleation at the time since the same comic book run revealed that Magneto’s estranged wife, Magda, was pregnant at the time of their separation and went to the Wundagore Mountain to give birth to the mutant children.

Who Is Scarlet Witch’s and Quicksilver’s Father?

Magneto was established as the father of the twins for decades, and the complicated family was responsible for one of the biggest and most important Marvel Comics events in the last two decades – House of M.

The whole event focused on Wanda’s loss, specifically the loss of her children Billy and Tommy, whom she created from her Chaos Magic. This led to Wanda attacking her fellow Avengers and even tended to his daughter’s broken mental state.

Of course, everything gets even more complicated, and Magneto even considers killing Wanda to save her from herself and the rest of the world. But she has the upper hand and creates a world where the twins and their families will have everything they want.

Magneto is far from being “the father of the year” material, and after witnessing her father’s cruelty towards her brother and children, Wanda decides to erase the thing Max Eisenhardt loves the most – the mutants. ‘No More Mutants’ sees the mutant race being erased, and with that, Wanda kills countless people, and Magneto is indirectly responsible for the massacre as well.

The event’s aftermath is brutal for the supposed mutant family, but one comic book run revises the twins’ origin story once again, and Magneto is not the father of Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver anymore. How and why? Let’s discuss this further.

Who is the father of Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver?

As we already mentioned, Magneto was established as Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver’s father during the last few decades. They were children of Magneto and the Romani girl Magda, who left her then-husband and gave birth to the children in the Wundagore Mountain.

However, in 2015, Marvel Comics decided to revise the twins’ origins again and release a special comic book titled ‘AXIS,’ which focused on Red Skull trying to exterminate the mutant kind. In his efforts, Red Skull turned Genosha into a concentration camp and enslaved mutants and Inhumans.

Of course, Magneto, Scarlet Witch, Havok, and Rogue intervened, but Red Skull evolved into the more powerful version of himself – Red Onslaught. This is where things get complicated for Wanda and Pietro – after using the spell Scarlet Witch to affect the ones she is related to by blood, only Quicksilver seemingly dies, but Magneto stays unaffected.

This confirmed that Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver aren’t children of Magneto, and their mutant origins were false after all this time.

In the ‘Uncanny Avengers’ from 2015, Wanda and Pietro discover their true parentage and origins, including Django and Marya Maximoff, but they become their adoptive parents.

Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver’s Romani lineage stayed intact after Marvel confirmed that the mother of the twins was Natalya Maximoff, a Romani witch that lived near Novi Pazar in Serbia.

Who Is Scarlet Witch’s and Quicksilver’s Father?

After seeing that her line of work will negatively affect her children, Natalya leaves them with her brother and his wife, Django, and Marya Maximoff. The explanation of their genetic origins is connected to High Evolutionary, who kidnapped the children and changed their genomes.

After releasing them, the former human scientist returned the children to their maternal uncle and aunt after failing to give them to WWII heroes Whizzer and Miss America. The reason they were “identified” as mutants is similar to one of Franklin Richards – their genes are so similar to X-genes that the mutant tests were almost always false positive.

The ‘AXIS’ storyline changed the fundamental origin story of the Maximoff twins – they weren’t mutants anymore but enhanced beings who were experimented on by High Revolutionary.

The father of the twins is still unknown.

So, why Marvel decided to change Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver’s parents? There is speculation that the Marvel Studios and Fox dispute over X-Men rights prompted the company to change the twins’ parents and distance them from the mutant origins.

However, it’s cool that Wanda and Pietro have unique origins, are diverse by being Romani, and have “their” own thing going on.
