We know that the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, in a significant way, focused on Star-Lord’s life, but it is only in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 that we see him making peace with his past and returning to Earth to visit his long-lost grandfather. Although he wasn’t present at all while Peter was growing up and experiencing some of the toughest moments of his life, Peter’s Grandfather is a significant part of his past and, as it turns out, an important part of Quill’s future. This is why we’ve decided to analyze the character in a bit more detail. Let’s see who Star-Lord’s grandfather, Jason Quill is.

Jason Quill was the father of Meredith Quill and maternal grandfather to Peter Quill. Jason was supposed to get custody of Peter after Meredith’s passing, but soon after Meredith died, he was kidnapped by Yondu. Jason and Peter had virtually no contact throughout his life, with Peter mostly abandoning his past behind. The two did reunite in the end; however, after Peter decided to leave the Guardians of the Galaxy and spend some quality time with Jason, who was at the time fairly old but still remembered him. Jason Quill was one of the few humans that witnessed the Expansion event in 2014.

Now that we’ve given you a brief summary of Jason Quill, it’s time to analyze Star-Lord’s past in more detail. If you’re interested in more, stay with us and keep reading!

Star-Lord was haunted by his past for much of his adult life

We learned early in the franchise that Star-Lord’s mother, Meredith Quill, died because of an aggressive brain tumor that left him an orphan at a very young age. Star-Lord, then known as Peter Quill, was an eight-year-old boy when he witnessed the death of his mother and the collapse of his life as he knew it.

We know that almost immediately after his mother’s passing, Quill was abducted by Yondu, who served as his father figure for most of his life. Celestial Ego hired Yondu and the Ravagers to kidnap and deliver Peter Quill to him. Luckily for Quill, Yondu learned that Ego was murdering the kids delivered to him, so he simply kept Quill with the Ravagers and raised him as his own.

It’s perhaps not an ideal childhood since Yondu provided Quill with plenty of tough love and taught him how to be a criminal. Still, Quill obviously grew up around good influences since he turned out to be a superhero in the end and knew the difference between right and wrong.

We know that his mother was the most important focus of his past, as he never knew his father. This changed in GotG Vol. 2. Peter learned that his father was actually a Celestial named Ego who planted his “seed” all across the universe in the hopes of starting the “Expansion.” Ego planned to use the Expansion to remake the universe in his own image, and for this, he needed another Celestial.

Ego was desperately looking for Quill for years after learning of a powerful human who was able to hold the Power Stone in his bare hands, but it wasn’t because of his fatherly love. It’s to fuel his sick universe domination schemes.

Meeting his father, Star-Lord learned that Ego was responsible for his mother’s death since he was the one that put the tumor on her brain in order to avoid emotional attachments. In a fit of rage, Quill killed him and stopped the Expansion.

Ego and Star Lord

With this, Quill’s backstory ended, but he still had some “loose ends” on Earth, namely his grandfather.

Who is Jason Quill & what happened to him?

Jason Quill was Meredith Quill’s father and Star-Lord’s maternal grandfather. Jason was the one who took Peter from his mother’s room as she was dying. He was supposed to take care of Peter after his mother’s passing, but sadly never got the chance as Yondu abduced Peter.

Jason Quill never knew who Peter’s father was, and we can assume that he was among the family members who found Meredith delusional when she told the rest of the family that Peter’s father came from the stars.

Nevertheless, he still cared about his daughter and was affected by her death. We don’t know what happened to Jason for most of his life, but we know that 26 years later while finding himself in the vicinity of Ego’s seedling, he was almost overtaken by the Expansion. He managed to survive because Expansion was abruptly stopped, and everything returned to normal.

Star-Lord was perhaps convinced that his father was dead, and perhaps he simply didn’t care about him since he gave little thought to the man for most of his life. But it’s most likely that, especially what he found out from Ego, it was too painful for him to face his past and everyone who was left on Earth.

Will Star-Lord Return to the Guardians of the Galaxy in the Future?

During the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, we know that Mantis suggested to Star-Lord that his grandfather might still be alive. At first, Star-Lord dismissed this, but ultimately, after breaking things with Gamora seemingly forever, he changed his mind and decided to, like Rocket Raccoon, stop running away from his past.

After leaving the team, Star-Lord made his way to Earth and reunited with his grandfather 38 years after he was first abducted and taken into space. Despite nearly four decades passing by, Jason Quill immediately recognized Star-Lord as his grandson and embraced him.

Even though Jason Quill was a relatively minor character in the whole franchise, he played an important part in Star-Lord finally returning to Earth and facing his past.
