Why Amazon Really Canceled ‘Spider-Noir’ Despite Its Rave Reviews

Critical acclaim doesn’t always guarantee a second season, and few recent cancellations illustrate that disconnect quite like what just happened at Prime Video. The streamer’s live-action Spider-Man spinoff had every hallmark of a hit: strong reviews, awards buzz and a movie star making his first true leap into television.

That show was ‘Spider-Noir,‘ starring Nicolas Cage as Ben Reilly, a down-on-his-luck private investigator in 1930s New York forced to confront his past as the city’s only masked hero. Despite earning a 92% critics score and a 90% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, along with 11 Emmy nominations, the most of any Prime Video series in 2026, Amazon has decided not to move forward with a second season.

According to Deadline, the real reason behind the cancellation comes down to a comparison most fans probably wouldn’t expect. ‘Spider-Noir’ simply didn’t hold onto its audience the way other recent Prime Video hits like ‘Reacher,’ ‘Off Campus’ and ‘Ride Or Die’ managed to, and that gap in staying power ultimately outweighed the show’s critical success.

On paper, ‘Spider-Noir’ actually launched impressively. The series debuted at number 2 on Nielsen’s U.S. Top 10 chart for original series, pulling in 851 million minutes viewed during its first week alone, a strong showing bolstered by Cage’s first true starring role in television.

That momentum, however, faded quickly. Over its first six weeks, the show generated a total of 2.6 billion viewing minutes, but it dropped off Prime Video’s daily Top 10 rankings relatively fast, a stark contrast to shows like ‘Reacher’ and ‘Off Campus,’ which have maintained consistent chart presence well beyond their debut weeks.

That kind of drop-off matters enormously in how streamers evaluate renewal decisions. Deadline notes that platforms like Prime Video base those calls primarily on the relationship between production cost and sustained performance, and ‘Spider-Noir’ simply couldn’t compete on that front given how expensive the series was to produce.

Much of that expense came down to a stylistic choice baked into the show from the beginning. ‘Spider-Noir’ filmed entirely dual versions of every episode, one in full color and another in black-and-white, a demanding production approach that significantly inflated the show’s budget compared to a standard single-format series.

That level of investment might have made sense if the audience retention had matched shows like ‘Reacher,’ which continues airing new seasons and remains one of Prime Video’s most consistently watched titles in the U.S. Instead, the mismatch between ‘Spider-Noir’s’ cost and its comparatively shorter shelf life on the platform’s charts appears to have sealed its fate, regardless of how well it performed critically.

There is a silver lining for fans left disappointed by the news. Season 1 largely wrapped up its central storyline with only a handful of loose threads left dangling, meaning viewers won’t be left with a major cliffhanger the way some canceled shows tend to leave behind.

‘Spider-Noir’ also starred Lamorne Morris, Li Jun Li, Karen Rodriguez, Abraham Popoola, Jack Huston and Brendan Gleeson, with Oren Uziel and Steve Lightfoot serving as co-showrunners and executive producers. The series was developed alongside the creative team behind ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,’ including Phil Lord, Christopher Miller and Amy Pascal.

Despite the cancellation, the broader Amazon-Sony collaboration on Sony’s Marvel characters remains active, with another project reportedly nearing a series order. Whatever comes next will likely need to prove it can hold an audience over the long haul, not just impress critics out of the gate.
