Why Episode 2 of ‘Dutton Ranch’ Had One of Its Toughest Scenes to Shoot

A scene in Episode 2 of Dutton Ranch looked simple on screen, but it was actually very hard to film. The information comes from an interview with /Film, where actor Finn Little talked about what happened during production.

The episode shows Carter and Oreana spending time together. They drink beer, talk, and shoot cans as part of a casual moment between them. On screen it looks easy and relaxed, but behind the scenes it was full of problems.

Finn Little, who plays Carter, explained that the main issue came from the gun effects used in the scene. The production team used squibs and blank rounds for the shooting sequence, and they did not always work correctly.

He said, “One of those first episodes of shooting was really fun. We kept having problems with the squibs, the bottles that kept going off. You’d shoot two, and then I’d shoot two, but you kept shooting … They were blank rounds, but you’d shoot two, and then three would go off.”

This meant the timing of the scene kept getting disrupted. Actors had to repeat actions, reset positions, and try to match each other’s movements while the effects misfired or went off at the wrong time.

Natalie Alyn Lind, who plays Oreana, also spoke about filming these moments. She said she had worked with firearms on set before, but this scene still gave her trouble because of how the blanks behaved and how strong the recoil felt during filming.

She explained, “In the past, I’ve had experience with firearms on set, but I mean, they’re all blanks. I don’t know, it’s the recoil that’s a little bit more intense with a real bullet than it is with a blank. That was the hardest part about it.”

Even though the scene was difficult to shoot, it plays an important role in the story. It helps build the early connection between Carter and Oreana. Their relationship starts in a simple and almost playful way, but the show hints that things will not stay peaceful for long.

In the wider story of Dutton Ranch, their relationship is complicated by family history and conflict. Oreana is connected to Beulah Jackson, a powerful ranch owner, while Carter is closely tied to the Dutton family through Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler. That means their growing bond sits in the middle of two groups that are already in conflict.

Even small scenes in the show can be difficult to produce, especially when practical effects like gunfire are involved. What looks simple on screen often takes multiple attempts and careful coordination behind the camera.

For now, Carter and Oreana’s storyline is still early, and the show has not revealed where their relationship will go. But Episode 2 makes it clear that their connection is already building, even in the middle of chaos and tension.
