Why Most ‘Game of Thrones’ Spinoffs Fail, According to ‘House of the Dragon’ Creator
There have been many attempts to expand the world of Westeros since Game of Thrones ended, but only two spin-off shows have officially reached audiences so far. Those are House of the Dragon and the upcoming A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. Everything else has either been cancelled, reworked, or left in development without moving forward.
Ryan Condal addressed this directly in the interview. He explained that getting a spin-off made in this universe is very difficult because expectations are extremely high. The original show was a massive global hit, and anything connected to it is judged against that standard from the start.
Condal described the situation clearly when talking about how hard it is to launch a follow-up series. He said, “It’s always a tenuous thing creating the first sequel to a really successful franchise. There were other attempts before us to get things up on their feet that, unfortunately, weren’t so successful, because there is a really high bar.”
One of the earlier attempts was a prequel series called Bloodmoon, which starred Naomi Watts. The show had a reported budget of around 30 million dollars for its pilot episode and was set thousands of years before the events of Game of Thrones. It was meant to explore the early history of Westeros, including the Children of the Forest and House Stark. However, HBO decided not to move forward with it in 2019.
After that project was dropped, HBO shifted focus to adapting George R. R. Martin’s book Fire & Blood. That decision led to the creation of House of the Dragon, which became the first successful spin-off. The show premiered in 2022 and quickly became one of HBO’s biggest modern hits.

Condal said that making the show work required a careful balance. He explained that many things had to come together at the same time for it to succeed. He said, “You’re threading a needle and a lot of things have to go. You’re trying to capture lightning in a bottle in a way. I think we were lucky enough to do that with season one of this show.”
The interview also touched on A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, another planned spin-off in the same universe. Condal noted that this series is very different in tone from House of the Dragon. Instead of focusing on large wars and political conflict, it tells a smaller and more personal story.
He explained that this change in style was intentional. According to him, trying to run two similar shows at the same time would not work. He said, “Because I don’t think we could have two series on the air at the same time about wars for the throne in different eras.”
The new series focuses on Ser Duncan the Tall and a young Aegon Targaryen, known as Egg. Condal praised the work of the creative team behind it and said he supported the project from a distance while letting the showrunner Ira Parker lead the way.
Why do you think most Game of Thrones spin-offs fail?
He said, “Ira did such a wonderful job with that show. I really commend him. I was fortunate enough to help out at an arm’s length distance with it and provide support where I could, but that show’s entirely his and I’m really, really pleased by the success of it.”
With only a few spin-offs making it to screen, Condal’s comments highlight just how difficult it is to continue the Game of Thrones universe in a way that meets both creative and audience expectations.
