Why ‘Young Washington’ Ditched America to Film in Ireland’s Countryside
Jon Erwin’s sprawling new biopic ‘Young Washington’ has finally hit theaters, and one detail keeps catching audiences off guard. Despite telling a deeply American story about the Founding Father’s early military career, the production didn’t shoot a single frame stateside.
The film follows a young George Washington navigating the French and Indian War long before he became a household name, and Angel Studios timed its release to coincide with the nation’s semiquincentennial celebrations with the movie opening in theaters on July 3, 2026. But the making of this patriotic tale took the cast and crew thousands of miles from Virginia’s rolling hills.
Young Washington Filming Locations Explained
‘Young Washington’ is a 2026 American epic historical war drama directed, produced, and co-written by Jon Erwin, and according to its official IMDb page, the entire production was filmed in Ireland. That choice surprised some viewers expecting a distinctly American backdrop for a story so tied to the nation’s founding mythology.
One critic didn’t hold back about the irony, noting that the film revels in its patriotism at every turn despite being shot in Ireland, apparently because nowhere in America approximates the Virginia landscapes of that period. It’s a detail that has become something of a talking point among reviewers covering the film’s release.
The Irish countryside apparently offered the untouched, pre-industrial look that modern Virginia locations simply couldn’t replicate anymore. For a film built around recreating the 1750s American frontier, that meant looking abroad for landscapes that hadn’t been altered by centuries of development.
Young Washington Cast And Production Details
The film centers on ‘Young Washington’ star William Franklyn-Miller in the title role, joined by a heavyweight supporting cast that includes Mary-Louise Parker, Kelsey Grammer, Andy Serkis, and Ben Kingsley. Franklyn-Miller stars as the titular character, focusing on Washington’s experiences and command during the French and Indian War.
The official synopsis sets the tone for the story, describing how before he was the Father of a Nation, he was a soldier fighting to survive, with a single misstep thrusting young George Washington into the center of a global conflict that tests his honor, loyalty, and courage. It’s a coming of age war story dressed up as a founding father origin tale.
Production reportedly began development back in the summer of 2025, with Erwin brought on to both direct and co-write the script alongside Tom Provost and Diederik Hoogstraten. The film eventually premiered well ahead of its wide release, giving early audiences a first look at the finished product.
Young Washington Ireland Shoot and Behind-the-Scenes Challenges
Filming in Ireland wasn’t just about scenery. It also created unique logistical hurdles, particularly for the film’s more dangerous sequences involving water and freezing conditions.
For one pivotal scene where Washington and a companion nearly drown in an icy river, Erwin relied on a 50-foot pool of water built specifically in Ireland, combined with props of ice and generative AI tools to help generate wider shots of the sequence. The director explained his reasoning directly to Variety, saying the actors, raft, and water were all real, just not cold, and that the crew mapped the smaller filming area to appear much larger in post-production.

Erwin also used AI in more unexpected ways during the Irish shoot. In one instance, the team turned two Wonder Project employees into background British soldiers using AI, placing them in period-accurate costumes and on horseback after filming them in street clothes. He’s used similar blended techniques before on projects for Amazon MGM Studios, and continues to lead an AI-focused production venture alongside Wonder Project and Luma AI.
The reliance on AI tools has not gone unnoticed. Some viewers online have criticized the film’s use of the technology, which added another layer of discussion to a movie already generating buzz for its unconventional shooting location.
Young Washington Premiere and Release Timeline
‘Young Washington’ didn’t go straight to a wide release. The film premiered at the Tribeca Festival on June 13, 2026, before Angel Studios rolled it out nationwide on July 3, 2026. Tribeca’s own description called it an extraordinarily ambitious period piece and a pulse pounding recreation of a less explored period in Washington’s life.
Beyond the traditional theatrical run, the film also picked up a notable diplomatic tie in. Young Washington will screen at U.S. embassies worldwide in partnership with the State Department, timed to the same weekend as the nation’s semiquincentennial celebrations. Angel co-founder Neal Harmon framed the film as a story about growth and leadership earned through adversity as the country marks its 250th anniversary.
Critical reception has landed somewhere in the middle. On Rotten Tomatoes, 60 percent of critics’ reviews are positive with an average rating of 6 out of 10, while Metacritic assigned the film a score of 52 out of 100, indicating mixed or average reviews. That split has fueled plenty of debate over whether the film’s ambition matched its execution.
Whether or not critics were won over, the choice to recreate colonial Virginia on the other side of the Atlantic has clearly become one of the most talked about pieces of trivia surrounding the film. Do you think ‘Young Washington’ pulled off its Irish disguise as the American frontier, or does the setting swap take you out of the story?
