Will Smith Clarifies Michael B. Jordan’s Role in ‘I Am Legend 2’

After almost 20 years, believe it or not, I Am Legend is coming back with a sequel. And while we could debate whether Will Smith’s alternative ending straw is a good plot point or a sign of desperation, the movie is in development, although it seems we’ll have to wait a bit.
According to the latest info we have, a final version of the script still hasn’t been written, but Will Smith and his co-star, Michael B. Jordan, are preparing for the film, as things stand.
When it was announced that Jordan would star in the movie, many thought that he would be either replacing Smith as the lead, or that he would be playing his son. Now, Smith himself has clarified Jordan’s role in the movie.
As said, when Jordan was first announced to be the movie’s lead, two main theories appeared. The first one accounted for Smith’s character being dead (which is the version of the movie that most people saw), which meant that Jordan would be taking over the main role.
In light of that, a second theory stipulated that Jordan would also play the role of Smith’s in-universe son, which made absolute sense, seeing how the movie would feature a time-skip and seeing how Jordan is younger than Smith.
But, as it turns out, everyone was wrong:
As said, Smith grabbed the alternative ending straw from the original movie. The alternative ending, included in the home releases of the movie, shows his character survived the movie, but no one really ever considered that ending canonical. Until now. Now it’s canon.
And while, as we’ve said, don’t know whether there is a genuine plot moment there or whether this is just Smith’s desperate attempt to revive his career using old IP after the Jada and Oscar affairs, we now know that the universe is expanding and that Jordan will be a co-lead in the movie.
Whether that turns out to be a good decision or not – only time will tell. Until then, be sure to stick with us for all the updates!
