‘Wonka 2’ Isn’t Indefinitely Delayed, Writer Clarifies Viral Reports & Says Statements Were Taken Out of Context

Franchise sequel news has a habit of spiraling out of control within hours of a single quote hitting the internet, and this week’s ‘Wonka 2′ saga proved exactly how quickly that can happen. What started as a routine interview about an entirely different project ended up dominating entertainment headlines for reasons its subject never intended.

That chaos began when Simon Farnaby, co-writer of the original ‘Wonka’ alongside director Paul King, sat down with Variety primarily to discuss his new film ‘The Magic Faraway Tree.’

In the course of that conversation, Farnaby offered an update on the long-gestating sequel, explaining that Timothée Chalamet “wants to do one, but he’s not sure about timing or what he wants to do next,” before describing the follow-up as “delayed indefinitely.”

Those two words spread across entertainment outlets almost instantly, including ours, with headlines framing the sequel as effectively dead in the water. Warner Bros. moved quickly to push back on that narrative, with a studio spokesperson stating, “Reports suggesting a Wonka 2 delay are entirely false. The Wonka creative team is hard at work on the next chapter.”

Now Farnaby himself has stepped in to clarify the record directly. In a post shared on X, he wrote, “Hi all, just wanted to clear up some rumours about Wonka 2 after my Variety interview. My quotes were taken a little out of context by some people. I 100% did not say Wonka 2 wasn’t happening. A sequel was always the plan.”

Farnaby went on to offer a considerably more optimistic picture than the original headlines suggested. “Everyone is working really hard on it,” he wrote. “WB are committed. There is a great script by Paul and I. Timmy wants to do it (like I said!) it’s just about working out schedules and making sure it’s as fantastic as we know it can be, and these things take a little time. Very sorry for any confusion! Good day sirs.”

That clarification helps reconcile the seemingly conflicting accounts that emerged within hours of each other. Rather than the project being scrapped or stalled indefinitely, the actual holdup appears to be entirely scheduling-related, tied to Chalamet’s packed slate following the conclusion of ‘Dune: Part Three,’ which releases in theaters on December 18.

Chalamet’s calendar has indeed been busy enough to explain the hesitation. He’s reportedly linked to a voice role in ‘Not Alone’ alongside Selena Gomez, along with a potential heist thriller from ‘A Complete Unknown’ director James Mangold, giving him plenty of competing commitments before he’d realistically be able to commit to a Wonka sequel shoot.

Farnaby’s broader Variety interview also touched on his and King’s other ongoing projects, including their involvement with the newly greenlit fourth ‘Paddington’ film, for which the pair have been meeting with incoming writers Armando Iannucci and Simon Blackwell, even though they aren’t directly writing that installment themselves.

For fans anxious about the future of Chalamet’s chocolate-coated franchise, the walk-back offers real reassurance that a sequel remains firmly in the studio’s plans, even if the exact timeline stays uncertain for now. Sometimes a single out-of-context quote is all it takes to send an entire fandom into a panic, and clearing that up seems to have been exactly what Farnaby set out to do.
