Marvel’s next generation of heroes has been quietly building momentum for years, waiting for the right moment to step into the spotlight. With the studio’s next two Avengers films approaching, speculation is mounting that this could finally be the moment several of those younger characters get their due.

Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova has been at the center of that speculation more than most. Since debuting in 2021’s ‘Black Widow’ and later appearing in ‘Hawkeye’ and ‘Thunderbolts*,’ Yelena has steadily grown into one of the MCU’s most compelling supporting figures, and insiders have suggested her role is only getting bigger from here.

Now, fresh rumors point to Yelena reuniting with Hailee Steinfeld’s Kate Bishop for ‘Avengers: Secret Wars,’ with both characters reportedly set to play important roles in the film. The two briefly crossed paths in Disney+’s ‘Hawkeye’ series, and this would mark their first true reunion on the big screen if the rumor holds up.

That potential reunion has been a long time coming for the actors involved. Steinfeld has previously spoken about how much she enjoyed working alongside Pugh, describing scenes that leaned heavily on dialogue and how quickly the two found their rhythm together.

“She’s wonderful,” Steinfeld said. “I would do anything to work more with Florence, especially in the Kate and Yelena world. I think we’d have a lot of fun.”

Pugh’s confirmed presence in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ has only fueled speculation about how far her involvement extends into ‘Secret Wars.’ One report from industry insider DanielRPK suggested Yelena isn’t simply surviving the events of ‘Doomsday,’ but is instead being positioned as one of the primary characters anchoring the story of ‘Secret Wars’ itself.

That tracks with comments Pugh has made about wanting to further explore Yelena’s protective, caretaker instincts in future projects, a trait the character displayed toward both Kate Bishop and Lewis Pullman’s Bob Reynolds in ‘Thunderbolts*.’ If Yelena’s arc continues along those lines, a larger team-up involving characters like Kate Bishop would fit naturally into that trajectory.

Other reports have floated an even wider roster of younger heroes potentially featured in ‘Secret Wars,’ including Kathryn Newton’s Cassie Lang and Iman Vellani’s Kamala Khan, suggesting Marvel may be using the film to formally hand the reins to its next wave of characters following the larger ensemble spectacle of ‘Doomsday.’

This wouldn’t be the first time Marvel has used a massive crossover event to elevate supporting characters into more central roles. With ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ expected to unite the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, and the X-Men into one sprawling ensemble, some reports suggest ‘Secret Wars’ could shift focus toward emerging heroes once that larger story concludes.

Some speculation even suggests ‘Secret Wars’ could pick up directly from where ‘Doomsday’ leaves off, with Doctor Strange potentially playing a role in restoring characters needed to challenge Doctor Doom. Under that framing, younger heroes like Yelena and Kate could end up carrying significant weight in the story’s back half.

As with most Marvel casting reports this far ahead of release, none of these details have been officially confirmed by the studio. ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ isn’t set to hit theaters until December 17, 2027, leaving plenty of time for plans to shift before anything becomes official.

Still, given how consistently Yelena and Kate’s connection keeps surfacing across insider reports, and how openly both actresses have expressed interest in working together again, the rumor carries more weight than most.
