‘Yellowjackets’ Star Hilary Swank Announces Third Pregnancy at 52 With a Playful Glow-in-the-Dark Family Video
Hilary Swank has spent decades building a reputation as one of the most respected actresses of her generation. Her career took off with 1999’s ‘Boys Don’t Cry’, which earned her an Oscar, and she won a second for ‘Million Dollar Baby’ in 2004. Away from the screen, her life has taken some of its biggest turns more recently.
In 2015, she stepped back from film work to care for her father after a lung transplant, returning in 2018 with ‘What They Had’. Her father passed away in October 2021, and she later shared how deeply that period shaped her priorities. That experience made the next chapter of her life, motherhood, even more meaningful.
She first became a mother in 2023, and now her family is growing again. Swank, 52, announced on October 14 that she’s pregnant with her third child with husband Philip Schneider. She revealed the news in a playful Instagram video, rather than a traditional pregnancy photo.
The clip shows Schneider and the couple’s 3-year-old twins, Aya and Ohm, dancing in the dark with glow sticks taped to their bodies, appearing as glowing stick figures. Swank then joins them, turning around to show a miniature stick figure across her baby bump. It’s a clever visual that lets the news land with a smile.
She added a joke to the caption, noting that people have been asking what project she’s doing next, and that this one releases in December. The line also hints at when the baby is due, at the end of the year.
Swank’s path to parenthood has been very public. She first revealed she was expecting twins on ‘Good Morning America’ in October 2022, at age 48. She said at the time that it was something she had wanted for a long time.
The twins arrived in April 2023, and she shared the news on Easter with a photo of herself holding the newborns while looking out over the water. She said the experience wasn’t easy, but that it was worth it. In February 2024, she revealed their names, Aya and Ohm, with a photo of the children at the beach with their backs to the camera and their names written in the sand.
She has also been candid about the timeline. Swank has said she froze her eggs about a decade before getting pregnant, and she has described having children in her 40s as the best decision, even if she might have done it earlier.
Swank and Schneider, an entrepreneur, met on a blind date in 2016 and married in 2018. Twins run in Schneider’s family, which Swank joked about when she announced her first pregnancy. She has kept her family largely private, though she occasionally shares glimpses, like a snowy weekend with one of the twins last year.
She has also approached toddlerhood with humor. She has put an optimistic spin on the so-called terrible twos, reframing them as a time of learning. That attitude seems to carry into her latest announcement.
The reaction has been warm. Followers flooded her post with congratulations, and many said they were excited for her and her family. It’s a notably different response from 2022, when she faced some nasty comments after announcing her twin pregnancy and stayed unfazed.
For an actress known for portraying strong, determined women, the real-life story feels fitting. Swank has always been selective about the projects she takes on, and this time the project is a family one. She even managed to keep her first pregnancy secret from the cast and crew of ‘Alaska Daily’ until she shared it publicly.
Whether this announcement leads to a break from acting remains to be seen. For now, she’s focused on the family she and Schneider are building.
