A24’s ‘You Can See Everything’ has become the biggest box office surprise of the fall, and it shows no signs of slowing down. The nearly 3-hour Elizabeth Holmes documentary opened on fewer than 900 screens, and it is still pulling in crowds weeks after it widened.

The film is co-directed by Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim, and it began as a surprise screening at the Telluride Film Festival on September 7. It follows Holmes through the 34 days before she reported to federal prison. When it opened in theaters on October 16, it earned an estimated $15 million from 855 screens, with more than 2,000 sellout showings. That was the biggest non-music documentary opening since ‘Fahrenheit 9/11’ in 2004.

The newest numbers push it into rarefied territory. Estimates put its fourth Friday at $2.6 million, the biggest fourth Friday ever for a documentary. That was a drop of just 28.2% from the previous Friday, even though the film lost 770 theaters and is now playing in 2,473.

Those figures bring the running total to an estimated $73.5 million in the US. That moves it past 2 music documentaries that have long sat near the top of the all-time chart. ‘Michael Jackson’s This Is It’ finished with about $72.1 million, and ‘Justin Bieber: Never Say Never’ finished with about $73 million.

The Friday drop is the stat that stands out. Estimates also suggest the film held better than ‘Fahrenheit 9/11’ did on its own comparable Friday, when that Michael Moore film dropped 38.6%. Holding that well while shedding hundreds of screens is a sign that audiences are still seeking it out.

The run has been steady since the wide expansion. The film jumped to 2,655 theaters for its second weekend and earned $19.5 million. Over Halloween weekend, it narrowly topped the box office with an estimated $10.6 million from 3,243 theaters, edging ‘Clayface’ and bringing its total to about $63.9 million.

The next milestone is ‘March of the Penguins’, which finished with roughly $77.5 million. Estimates suggest the Holmes documentary could pass that total this weekend. A fourth 3-day weekend of $8 million to $10 million is expected, which would put the film above that nature documentary and higher on the all-time list.

Analysts have gone further. They have floated the idea that it could top the $119 million domestic total of ‘Fahrenheit 9/11’ and become the highest-grossing documentary ever. That would be a remarkable outcome for a project that cost under $7 million to make.

A24 reportedly spent less than $10 million on marketing, so the economics are already a win for the studio. Younger viewers have driven much of the success, with roughly 70% of the opening weekend crowd under 35. The trailer also turned into a meme, with Holmes staring unblinkingly at Fielder as she asks why she would deceive him.

Critics have been just as enthusiastic. The film holds scores of 99% from critics and 98% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. It has also earned a Letterboxd rating of 4.71 out of 5, and Oscar speculation has followed. If it lands a best picture nomination, it would be the first documentary ever nominated for the Academy’s top prize.

Part of the appeal is that it doesn’t play like a standard true-crime film. Fielder’s dry, uncomfortable style blurs the line between documentary and performance, which gives audiences a reason to talk about it afterward. The cast even includes a surprise cameo from Amanda Seyfried, who played Holmes in ‘The Dropout’.

For a documentary, the numbers are historic, and the film is still climbing the all-time chart. Whether it eventually catches ‘Fahrenheit 9/11’ remains to be seen, but passing 2 music documentaries is already a milestone few expected.

Do you think You Can See Everything can become the highest-grossing documentary of all time and earn a Best Picture Oscar nomination?
