The early 2020s have been a pretty rough period for DC Studios so far. The last seven DCEU movies have all been box-office disappointments, and since 2022’s ‘The Batman,’ which is separated from DCEU, DC Studios hasn’t released a commercially successful movie. This year’s ‘Shazam! Fury of the Gods’ was this year’s first box office failure, with only $133.8 million grossed worldwide against a budget of $125 million. On top of that, we know that DCEU is facing a soft reboot. Therefore, Zachary Levi’s future as Shazam is under a big question mark.

Levi debuted as Shazam in the original ‘Shazam!’ movie, which was released in 2019 as a part of then-DC Films’ plan to focus more on standalone movies. The movie received positive reviews for its family story and sense of fun and grossed $367.7 million worldwide, which maybe doesn’t sound much, but it was enough to grant it a sequel, which turned out to be inferior in both critical and commercial ways. With everything going around DC for now, it’s highly unlikely that Levi will return as Shazam, but Levi still has some hopes, at least according to the latest reports that are coming from Fan Expo Canada.

The ‘Shazam!’ star hopes to team up with a supporting character from James Gunn’s ‘Superman Legacy’!

According to Agents of Fandom, Levi recently revealed at Fan Expo Canada that he would like to return as Shazam and work alongside Nathan Fillion, who is set to play Guy Gardner/Green Lantern in the upcoming ‘Superman: Legacy,’ the first movie set in DCU.

DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn is developing the upcoming Superman movie, which is set to kick off DCU, the soft-reboot franchise of DCEU. While many things in DCU will be rebooted, the reboot franchise will keep some actors and continue some storylines from DCEU. James Gunn recently said that Blue Beetle is the first superhero in DCU, which, in theory, could indicate some chances for Levi to return as Shazam since several other DCEU actors, like Gal Gadot, hope to continue playing their roles in DCU, but those chances are on thin glass at this moment.

Nathan Fillion was cast to play Guy Gardner/Green Lantern last month, and there’s also the ‘Lanterns’ series in development, which will feature Hal Jordan and John Stewart’s Green Lanterns. Before Gunn came on board, DC was developing the ‘Green Lantern Corps.’ series, in which Guy Gardner was set to play by Finn Wittrock. However, that project was scrapped and redeveloped as the ‘Lanterns’ series.

DCU currently has five movies and five television series in development. The first series, ‘Creature Commandos,’ is set to premiere on the Max streaming service next year, and ‘Superman: Legacy’ is scheduled to open in theaters in July 2025. These are the only two projects that are currently written, while the others are on hold due to the ongoing strikes in Hollywood.
