Zack Snyder Reveals He Got the Apology From Warner Bros. He Never Thought He’d Hear

Zack Snyder has spent the better part of this month doing press for ‘The Last Photograph’ at the Toronto International Film Festival, and that promotional run has turned into something much bigger than a typical movie rollout. Between fielding questions about his critics, his politics and his creative future, Snyder has also found himself revisiting one of the most painful chapters of his career.

That chapter centers on the collapse of his original DC universe, a saga that began with ‘Man of Steel’ and ‘Batman v Superman’ before falling apart entirely during production on ‘Justice League.’ Snyder exited the film following the death of his daughter, and Warner Bros. brought in Joss Whedon to finish it, resulting in a heavily altered theatrical cut that was critically panned and effectively ended the cohesive vision Snyder had originally built.

Now, in a new interview, Snyder revealed that a former Warner Bros. executive has since admitted the studio was wrong to fight him on his vision. Speaking with Variety, Snyder recounted the executive telling him, “You were right about everything,” a moment he described as an unexpected piece of closure years after the fact.

According to Snyder, the executive went further, explicitly acknowledging that the studio had fought him throughout the process only to realize afterward that his instincts had been correct all along. Snyder clarified that the disagreement extended beyond just ‘Justice League’ itself, covering the broader vision for the DC universe and his overall filmmaking approach that clashed with what the studio wanted at the time.

Snyder didn’t shy away from describing just how difficult that period was for him personally, noting that the timing of the theatrical cut’s release coincided with the hardest stretch of his life following his daughter’s death. He has said he has still never watched the Whedon version of the film, with his wife and producing partner Deborah Snyder having seen it ahead of release and warning him never to watch it himself.

That decision seems to have protected Snyder from confronting a version of his work that diverged so sharply from his own creative intentions. The eventual release of ‘Zack Snyder’s Justice League’ years later, driven largely by sustained fan campaigning, gave audiences a chance to see his original vision, though Warner Bros. has continued to move away from that continuity entirely under the current DC Studios leadership.

Snyder framed the studio’s original resistance with a degree of understanding, acknowledging that the executives involved were protecting an enormously valuable piece of intellectual property and that their jobs depended on the franchise succeeding. Even so, hearing a direct admission that his creative choices were ultimately validated appears to have offered Snyder a genuine sense of closure on a saga that has followed him for nearly a decade.

Whether this kind of acknowledgment paves the way for any future collaboration between Snyder and Warner Bros. remains unclear, especially given the studio’s current direction under DC Studios leadership.
