Method dressing has become one of the defining trends of modern movie press tours, with stars increasingly using their wardrobe choices to echo the characters they play rather than just showing up in whatever happens to be trending that season.

Christopher Nolan’s mythology-soaked epic has turned into one of the year’s most closely watched examples of that approach, with its cast leaning hard into Grecian silhouettes and color palettes at every stop. One actress in particular has taken that concept and run with it from the very first day.

The Odyssey‘ cast kicked off its international press tour in New York City on July 1, giving fans their first look at how each star would interpret the film’s ancient Greek setting through their own personal style. Zendaya, who plays the goddess Athena in Nolan’s adaptation, arrived for that first stop in a look that set the tone for what has become a consistently themed wardrobe rotation throughout the campaign.

Zendaya’s latest round of New York press photos shows her in a flowing ivory Khaite dress, paired with striking gold gladiator-style sandals that immediately tie the look back to the film’s ancient setting. The dress, part of Khaite’s Resort 2027 collection, featured a semi-sheer, low-cut blouse with a ruffled peplum hem flowing into a matching knee-length skirt, cinched at the waist with a black and gold leather belt for shape.

The real standout of the ensemble turned out to be her footwear choice. Zendaya wore Christian Louboutin’s Millennium sandals in a light gold metallic finish, featuring four thin buckled straps stretching horizontally across the foot in a design that directly recalled ancient Greek gladiator sandals, a deliberate sartorial nod that lined up perfectly with the film’s subject matter. It marked her first time reviving the gladiator sandal trend in roughly a decade, according to fashion outlets tracking the look.

That single footwear choice ended up generating its own wave of coverage, with several fashion writers noting that Zendaya had managed to avoid making the look feel costumey despite its clear thematic connection to the film. Stylist Law Roach, who has worked with Zendaya throughout the press tour, has continued what outlets have described as expert thematic dressing, building an entire wardrobe rotation around white, draped silhouettes and gold accents befitting a goddess character.

That New York look kicked off a much larger fashion arc that has continued to unfold across the tour’s later stops.

In London, Zendaya wore a stark white Jacquemus dress with a halter neck bodice and matching headscarf for the film’s world premiere, followed by a Valentino gown backstage and later a glowing Schiaparelli Haute Couture piece that had walked the runway at Paris Haute Couture Week just hours before she wore it. For the Paris premiere itself, she stepped into a vintage Alexander McQueen for Givenchy piece from the label’s spring 1997 collection, complete with an original Phillip Treacy headpiece.

With ‘The Odyssey’ still scheduled to make additional international stops before its July 17 release, Zendaya’s wardrobe has already established itself as one of the tour’s most talked-about threads, consistently balancing archival and current season pieces while staying tethered to her character’s mythological roots. That New York moment, gladiator sandals and all, now reads as the opening chapter of a fashion arc fans have been tracking city by city ever since.
