Zendaya Reportedly Set to Replace Matt Damon as New Face of the ‘Bourne’ Franchise
The Bourne franchise may be preparing for its biggest change yet, with a new report claiming that Zendaya could become the next major star of the popular spy series.
For years, the Jason Bourne movies have tried to move forward in different ways. While 2007’s The Bourne Ultimatum was seen as the end of Matt Damon’s story as the famous secret agent, the franchise continued with a spinoff, a Damon-led comeback film, and even a television prequel series. Although the 2016 movie Jason Bourne did not create the major revival Universal hoped for, the studio has continued looking for ways to bring the series back.
The latest rumor comes from entertainment reporter Jeff Sneider through his newsletter The InSneider. According to Sneider, Zendaya has reportedly spoken with Universal about taking over the franchise and becoming the new lead of the Bourne series. However, the report remains unconfirmed, and Sneider also noted that a Universal spokesperson denied that there is any truth to the claim.
If the rumor turns out to be true, Zendaya’s version of Bourne would reportedly be a complete reboot of the franchise. Sneider claims the actress could play a female spy suffering from amnesia, similar to Matt Damon’s original character, Jason Bourne, who woke up with no memory of his past while being hunted by dangerous enemies.
There are currently no confirmed details about a director, writer, or production schedule for the possible reboot. Since the project is still only a rumor, it could be some time before fans learn whether Zendaya will officially join the series.

Still, the idea of Zendaya leading a major action franchise is not difficult to imagine. The actress has become one of Hollywood’s biggest stars thanks to roles in films like Spider-Man: No Way Home and Dune. She has also shown her range in smaller projects, proving she can handle both blockbuster movies and more emotional performances.
A new Bourne movie could also give Zendaya a chance to lead her own franchise instead of playing a supporting character. Taking on the role of a spy would allow her to explore a completely different type of action hero while also potentially becoming involved behind the scenes as a producer.
The timing could also work well for Universal. Zendaya has several major projects coming soon, including Spider-Man: Brand New Day, The Odyssey, and Dune: Part Three, but her schedule could become more open afterward. The studio already has connections with her through other upcoming projects, which could make a future partnership possible.
However, a full reboot could be a risky move. Many modern audiences enjoy connected stories and legacy sequels that continue from previous films rather than completely starting over. The Bourne franchise has already tested the idea of replacing Damon before with 2012’s The Bourne Legacy, which starred Jeremy Renner as a new character. The film received mixed reactions and did not create the long-term future Universal wanted, eventually leading to Damon returning in Jason Bourne.
For now, Zendaya’s involvement remains only a rumor, but the possibility has already created plenty of discussion among fans. If Universal does decide to rebuild the Bourne franchise around a new star, Zendaya could bring a fresh style and new energy to the world of international espionage.
