Zendaya has never been one to oversell a Marvel movie, which is exactly why her latest comment about ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ has the internet in full panic mode. During a promotional appearance in Spain alongside Tom Holland, the actress was asked how fans should prepare for the upcoming film. Her answer was short, slightly ominous, and immediately viral. “I would say watch all of our Spider-Man previous just to keep you caught up,” she said, “and then bring some tissues. We go there.”

The quote, lands at a particularly charged moment in the promotional cycle. The film picks up with Peter Parker fighting crime full-time in a world that no longer remembers him, with the pressure of watching his old friends move on without him sparking a change in Peter that he may not be able to control, alongside a powerful new threat no one can even see. That emotional setup gives Zendaya’s tissue warning plenty of room to mean something significant.

Zendaya has spoken about the challenge of returning to MJ four years later, describing it as an opportunity to imagine what the character’s life has looked like since the spell, and to “build our own little world and existence,” noting that MJ has had to move forward without Peter or the memories of what they shared. That kind of emotional weight clearly carries into the film itself.

While MJ and Ned are expected to have reduced roles in the story due to where things stand after the memory wipe, the long-term aim of the new trilogy is to eventually have Peter’s loved ones remember who he is, and the film is expected to showcase the highs and lows of the double life Peter has been living since Doctor Strange cast that spell.

The confirmed villain lineup includes Scorpion, Tombstone, the Hand, Tarantula, and Boomerang, while Sadie Sink’s character remains officially undisclosed, with fan speculation pointing toward a possible Jean Grey introduction. The film also brings Jon Bernthal back as Frank Castle and adds Mark Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner to the mix, giving Peter an unexpected ally who knows something about uncontrollable physical transformation.

Director Destin Daniel Cretton described the film as an attempt to create “an event, an emotional story, and a ride that we haven’t really seen before,” speaking at CinemaCon. Zendaya’s tissue comment suggests that ambition has translated into something that genuinely hits hard by the time the credits roll.

The comment set social media abuzz, with many fans interpreting it as a direct hint that the film takes a significant emotional turn, and some even began dissecting Zendaya’s fashion choices from the Spain promotional event for hidden narrative clues. Whether or not any of those theories hit the mark, one thing is now very clear. Marvel fans should probably have something nearby when the lights go down.

‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ arrives in US theaters on July 31, and UK cinemas will get it two days earlier on July 29.
