Zendaya’s ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Photocall Look Was a Secret Villain Tribute Fans Almost Missed
Zendaya’s press tour wardrobe for ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ has turned into its own kind of running story this summer, with stylist Law Roach treating every red carpet and photocall as a chance to sneak in another sly reference to the film’s world. What started as spider-web motifs and superhero color palettes eventually evolved into something far more clever.
That evolution reached one of its most striking moments at a New York City photocall held at Edge at Hudson Yards, where Zendaya posed against the city skyline in a look that, on the surface, read as simple monochrome sophistication. It wasn’t until the details came out that fans realized just how intentional the entire outfit actually was.
The ensemble came from Vetements, pairing an oversized white double-breasted blazer with a dark button-down shirt and a pale silver tie, finished off with thigh-high black patent leather boots. Roach later confirmed on his Instagram story that the striking black-and-white color scheme was a direct nod to Mr. Negative, the Spider-Man villain whose entire visual identity is built around a photographic-negative aesthetic.
It’s a notably more subtle reference than some of the tour’s earlier, more obvious spider-web-covered looks. Rather than leaning on literal web motifs or superhero red-and-blue coloring, this particular outfit tapped into a specific character whose black-and-white palette would be instantly recognizable to fans familiar with the comics and games, while still reading as high fashion to anyone who wasn’t in on the reference.
Mr. Negative was widely rumored as the villain for a long time (his comic-book debut inspired the “Brand New Day” title itself), and Zendaya’s stylist Law Roach used him purely as a fashion reference.
By mid-production, reports indicated Mr. Negative and his “Inner Demons” were reportedly dropped from the film, with other villains like Tombstone, Scorpion (Michael Mando), and Jon Bernthal’s Punisher factoring into the story instead. So the Mr. Negative outfit was more of a wink to the comics and the film’s title than a reference to an actual on-screen character.
Zendaya rounded out the look with spiderweb drop earrings from jeweler Jacob & Co., a small detail that tied the outfit back to the franchise more directly even as the broader silhouette leaned into villain-inspired styling rather than heroic imagery. It’s the kind of layered approach Roach has become known for throughout this particular promotional run.
That commitment to theme dressing has become something of a signature for the entire ‘Brand New Day’ press tour. Roach himself poked fun at his own dedication to the bit while sharing another archival Spider-Man-themed look from the tour, captioning the post “Don’t threaten me with a theme,” a nod to just how far he’s taken the concept across multiple countries and red carpets.
The Mr. Negative look joined a string of other standout ensembles throughout the tour, including a Versace spiderweb dress pulled from the 1990s archives for the film’s Rome premiere and a John Galliano gown in London featuring a beaded spiderweb motif across its back. Each stop seemed to bring a new, increasingly specific reference for fans to decode.

For a press tour built almost entirely around Peter Parker’s transformation and the world of villains circling him in the new film, Zendaya’s Mr. Negative homage fits neatly into the bigger picture Roach has been building look by look. It’s a reminder that even the quietest, most understated outfit on this particular tour likely has a comic book reference hiding somewhere in the details.
