Zendaya’s ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Premiere Look Comes with a Surprising Deeper Meaning
Red carpet season has a way of turning press tours into their own kind of spectacle, and few stars understand that better than Zendaya. Over the past several months, she and longtime stylist Law Roach have quietly built an entire narrative arc through fashion alone, one premiere at a time.
That approach has followed the actress from London to Shanghai and back to Los Angeles as she promotes ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ alongside husband and co-star Tom Holland. Each stop has brought its own distinct look, but a clear thread has run through nearly all of them: black, dramatic, and unmistakably intentional.
At the film’s Los Angeles premiere, that thread reached what may be its most striking moment yet. Zendaya arrived in a black satin Ashi Studio corset paired with a sweeping architectural train, immediately drawing attention as one of the standout looks of her entire press tour.
The design wasn’t just about spectacle, either. Speaking to Variety at the Monday night premiere, stylist Law Roach explained that the look was meant as an abstract interpretation of the spider itself, describing it as representing the metamorphosis of a woman into something else entirely.
That kind of symbolism has become something of a signature for the Zendaya and Roach pairing throughout this cycle. The duo has leaned heavily into gothic, shadowy silhouettes for the ‘Brand New Day’ rollout, a deliberate departure from brighter red-carpet norms that has fans speculating about hidden meaning behind the wardrobe choices.
The jewelry told its own part of the story as well, with Roach confirming the accessories worn alongside the corset came from Boucheron. It was a quieter detail compared to the gown itself, but one that added another layer of polish to an already commanding look.
This wasn’t Zendaya’s only standout moment of the tour, either. Days earlier, at the Shanghai premiere, she stepped out in a plunging, high-slit dress pulled from Atelier Versace’s Spring/Summer 2016 couture collection, styled with an archival David Webb spider brooch featuring a cushion-cut yellow sapphire surrounded by diamonds. The off-white fabric combined with black web-like mesh made the piece feel purpose-built for the occasion, even though it came from an archive nearly a decade old.
Roach himself has been candid about how difficult it is to single out a favorite from the entire run, though he did highlight one earlier standout: an archival spiderweb-patterned dress from John Galliano’s 1997 “Circus” collection, worn back in June for the film’s London premiere.
That kind of range, pulling from multiple eras and designers while still tying every piece back to the film’s web-slinging themes, has turned Zendaya’s press tour into a genuine style event in its own right. It’s a rare case of method dressing translating into real cultural conversation, rather than simply serving as red carpet filler between premieres.
With Roach staying tight-lipped about what comes next for Zendaya’s upcoming ‘Dune: Part Three’ promotional run, all he would offer is that it’s going to be great, leaving fans to wonder what kind of storytelling awaits on that front.
For now, though, all eyes remain on ‘Brand New Day’, which hits theaters on July 31 with Zendaya starring alongside Holland, Mark Ruffalo, Jon Bernthal, Jacob Batalon, and Sadie Sink.
