15 Years Ago, ‘Suits’ Became the World’s Biggest TV Show
Fifteen years ago, on June 23, 2011, the legal drama “Suits” first arrived on USA Network. What started as a stylish show about lawyers in New York has since become one of the biggest streaming surprises, finding a massive new audience years after its original run ended. The series is now celebrating what feels like a 15-year anniversary moment, with fans still discovering the world of Harvey Specter, Mike Ross, and the powerful lawyers of Pearson Hardman.
Created by Aaron Korsh, “Suits” quickly stood out because it was not only about courtroom battles. The show mixed legal cases with sharp conversations, workplace drama, friendships, and personal conflicts. Its combination of smart writing and memorable characters helped it build a loyal fan base during its nine-season run.
The story follows Mike Ross, played by Patrick J. Adams, a young man with a photographic memory who never finished law school. Despite having no legal degree, Mike gets a chance to work at one of New York’s top law firms after impressing Harvey Specter, played by Gabriel Macht.
Harvey is one of the best lawyers in the city, known for his confidence and winning attitude. He sees something special in Mike but must protect his biggest secret: Mike is not actually a Harvard law graduate, which is required for lawyers at the firm.
The show focuses on the cases handled by the firm, but much of its popularity came from the relationships between the characters. Jessica Pearson, played by Gina Torres, served as the powerful leader of the firm, while Sarah Rafferty’s Donna Paulsen became one of the show’s most beloved characters. Rick Hoffman’s Louis Litt brought humor and emotion, while Meghan Markle’s Rachel Zane followed her journey from legal assistant to aspiring lawyer.
Although “Suits” was set in New York, most of the series was filmed in Toronto. The production team created the feeling of Manhattan through locations, set designs, visual effects, and iconic details like luxury offices and expensive suits. The fashion became one of the show’s trademarks, with the characters’ clothing reflecting their personalities and positions inside the firm.
The series ran for nine seasons and 134 episodes before ending in 2019. For years, it remained popular with its original audience, but its biggest comeback came after arriving on streaming platforms. According to Nielsen data, “Suits” became the most-watched streaming show in the United States in 2023, collecting more than 57 billion minutes viewed.
Fans praised the series for being “fun, smart, and stylish,” with many viewers especially enjoying the chemistry between Harvey and Mike. On IMDb, the show holds a strong audience rating of 8.4/10, showing how much support it continues to have years after the finale.

The series also earned recognition during its original run. Gina Torres won an ALMA Award for her role as Jessica Pearson, while the show received nominations from the People’s Choice Awards. Its costume design also became a major part of its identity, especially the famous business suits worn by the characters.
However, the attempt to continue the franchise with “Suits LA” did not achieve the same success. The spin-off, which premiered in 2025, followed Stephen Amell’s Ted Black, a former federal prosecutor running a struggling law firm in Los Angeles. Despite appearances from original characters Harvey Specter and Louis Litt, the show received mixed reactions and was canceled after one season.
Even though “Suits LA” did not last, the original series remains stronger than ever. Fifteen years after it first premiered, “Suits” has proven that a show does not always need to be new to become a phenomenon. Sometimes, the right story simply finds its audience at the perfect time.
