Stephen King, the master storyteller behind decades of horror and suspense, is thinking about slowing down. At 78, the bestselling author says he’s working to finish what’s already on his plate, but beyond that, he’s not sure how much longer he’ll keep writing.

“I’m trying to clear my desk as much as I can,” King told USA TODAY. “At my age, you’re off the warranty. You can’t take anything for granted.”

King still has two major novels to complete. One of them will revisit Holly Gibney, the private investigator who’s become a favorite among his readers.

The upcoming book will be the last in her series, and King says he’s preparing for it by rereading The Outsider to get back into her world. “I love Holly,” he said. “Right now I am rereading The Outsider because I have a way into this last Holly book so I need to refresh myself with that.”

Before that, King plans to return to the universe of The Talisman, the fantasy saga he co-wrote with the late Peter Straub. The new book will serve as the third in the series and, according to King, will tie together the worlds of The Talisman, Black House, and The Dark Tower. He described it as a way to “button up” those stories once and for all.

Even as he considers slowing down, King’s presence in pop culture remains strong. Several adaptations of his work are either out or on the way, including The Monkey, The Life of Chuck, The Long Walk, and a new take on The Running Man. On television, fans can expect The Institute and It: Welcome to Derry, a prequel to the It films.

King’s career has spanned over five decades, shaping generations of readers and filmmakers. Whether or not he continues after his next two books, his impact on storytelling is secure.
