A new Maze Runner movie is reportedly in the works, marking the return of the popular sci-fi franchise after several years of silence.

Industry insider Daniel Richtman recently shared that the new project will feature an original story set in the same universe but with new lead characters.

The news follows Disney’s acquisition of 21st Century Fox in 2019, after which the studio confirmed plans to continue the Maze Runner series.

For a while, there wasn’t much movement, but things picked up again in 2024 when it was revealed that a reboot was officially in development. Wes Ball, who directed the original trilogy, is coming back as a producer, and Jack Paglen has been hired to write the screenplay.

According to early reports, this new movie won’t be a direct sequel or a simple retelling of the first films. Instead, it’s described as “a sort of continuation… yet also return to the elements that made the first movie connect with its audience.” That means the story will explore fresh ground while staying true to the tone and style that made the original so memorable.

The first Maze Runner film, released in 2014, was based on James Dashner’s bestselling novel and served as Wes Ball’s directorial debut.

The movie starred Dylan O’Brien as Thomas, a teenager who wakes up inside a mysterious maze with no memory of his past. Joined by other boys trapped inside, he tries to find a way out while facing constant danger from the maze’s shifting walls and deadly creatures.

The film received mostly positive reactions from both fans and critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, it scored 66%, with the site noting that “With strong acting, a solid premise, and a refreshingly dark approach to its dystopian setting, The Maze Runner stands out from the crowded field of YA sci-fi adventures.” CinemaScore audiences gave it an A− rating, showing that moviegoers were impressed by the tense story and atmosphere.
