Blumhouse Bringing ‘Something Is Killing the Children’ to the Big Screen and Beyond – New Details Revealed
Blumhouse, the studio behind hits like Black Phone 2 and the upcoming Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, has won the rights to adapt the popular comic series Something Is Killing the Children.
The project had attracted interest from several companies, including Lionsgate and Netflix, but Blumhouse ultimately secured the deal.
The comic, created by James Tynion IV and artist Werther Dell’Edera, has been a hit since its 2019 debut from Boom! Studios.
The story follows Erica Slaughter, a monster hunter who protects children from creatures adults cannot see. Erica is part of the secretive Order of St. George, a group trained to fight monsters while keeping their existence hidden.
Blumhouse plans to develop Something Is Killing the Children both as a live-action feature film and an adult animated series. Tynion will be directly involved with the animated adaptation, helping bring the story to television.
Shaun Sutton and Ryan Turek will serve as executive producers on the live-action movie, with Tynion and Stephen Christy producing for Boom! Studios.
The property has been on Hollywood’s radar for years. Netflix had previously explored a live-action series with Mike Flanagan, as well as Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese, the creators of Dark, but passed on moving forward in late 2024.
Blumhouse’s approach was more aggressive, focusing on the comic’s unique world where children can see monsters but adults cannot. The success of recent horror hits, like Zach Cregger’s Weapons, also increased interest in the franchise.
Something Is Killing the Children has received critical acclaim, earning multiple Eisner Awards. Tynion won Best Writer in 2021, 2022, and 2023, and the series itself tied for Best Continuing Series in 2022. The story’s mix of horror, mystery, and strong central characters has made it a standout in the comic book world.
Blumhouse seems like a perfect home for this franchise, given its experience with horror and unique storytelling. Developing both a film and an animated series at the same time could let the story reach new audiences while staying true to its dark, suspenseful tone. Fans of the comic and horror lovers alike should have plenty to look forward to.
