DC Studios Greenlights Development of First ‘Superman’ Spinoff Series
DC Studios has officially confirmed that a spinoff series centered on Jimmy Olsen is now in development.
The news comes from The Hollywood Reporter, which revealed that American Vandal creators Dan Perrault and Tony Yacenda have been chosen to lead the project. The two will write, executive produce, and serve as showrunners for the upcoming show, which will expand the world introduced in James Gunn’s Superman film.
Skyler Gisondo, who played Jimmy Olsen in Superman, is returning to star. His character, a Daily Planet photographer with a knack for getting into unusual situations, quickly became a fan favorite after the movie’s release.
In the film, Jimmy managed to make a big impact despite his limited screen time, and his connection with Eve Teschmacher, Lex Luthor’s assistant and his ex-girlfriend, added some fun drama.
The new series will reportedly focus on Jimmy and other reporters at the Daily Planet (except Lois Lane and Clark Kent) as they take on strange and dangerous cases involving super-powered criminals.
One of the key villains in the first season will be Gorilla Grodd, the telepathic ape and ruler of Gorilla City, a classic character from The Flash comics first introduced in 1959.
James Gunn and Peter Safran, the heads of DC Studios, will also serve as executive producers on the show, with Galen Vaisman overseeing production for DC.
Before this announcement, rumors had already hinted that two spinoffs from Superman were in development, one focused on Jimmy Olsen and another centered on Edi Gathegi’s character, Mr. Terrific.
Insiders also claimed that the Jimmy Olsen series would take a different approach from typical superhero shows. Instead of big battles and costumes, it’s expected to have more of a crime anthology tone, exploring smaller-scale stories and different villains across the DC Universe.
This setup could give viewers a fresh look at the world of Metropolis, shining a light on the people working behind the headlines while diving into corners of the DC world that rarely get screen time.
