Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa said in 2021 that the company was interested in making more animated movies if the first Mario film performed well. Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri also mentioned the possibility of a sequel before the 2023 movie came out. After The Super Mario Bros. Movie became a box office hit, the sequel was officially announced in March 2024, with the original directors and screenwriter returning.
The first trailer shows the characters exploring new worlds and hints at exciting adventures beyond the Mushroom Kingdom. Fans will get to see Mario, Peach, Luigi, and Bowser facing new challenges, along with Rosalina and Bowser Jr. joining the story.
