‘Zootopia 2’ is breaking records at the box office, especially in China, where it has already made more money than ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ did during its full run. The film is now the fourth highest-grossing Hollywood movie ever in China.

As of December 5, the movie has earned $177 million in the United States and Canada. In other parts of the world, it has made $485 million, bringing the total worldwide box office to $662 million.

According to Deadline Hollywood, Zootopia 2 was expected to make over $125 million in North America during the five-day Thanksgiving weekend and $270 million globally. The movie ended up surpassing these numbers, earning $158 million in the U.S. and Canada, and $560.3 million worldwide in its first weekend. Its global opening became the highest ever for an animated film and the fourth-highest for any movie. The three-day opening in the U.S. and Canada brought in $100.3 million.

China has played a major role in the film’s success. The movie made $271.6 million in its opening weekend there. It also became the first Hollywood film to earn over $100 million in a single day on Saturday, November 29.

For comparison, ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ earned $382.7 million outside the U.S. and Canada from 52 markets and opened at number one in all of them. Its international opening was the second biggest ever, after ‘The Fate of the Furious,’ which earned $444.2 million. IMAX screenings contributed $18.5 million to Infinity War’s international total, beating the $17.5 million opening of ‘The Force Awakens’ outside North America and China.

Zootopia 2 is showing that animated films can compete with the biggest blockbusters, especially in global markets. Its performance in China proves how important the country has become for Hollywood movies.
