The 10 Most Hated ‘Star Wars’ Characters of All Time
The Star Wars universe is filled with iconic heroes and villains that fans have adored for generations. While many figures like Luke Skywalker and Han Solo are universally loved there are others who have sparked intense backlash from the audience. Some characters fail to connect because of poor writing while others are viewed as annoying distractions from the main plot. The debate over which individuals are the absolute worst continues to be a heated topic in forums and conventions around the world.
Jar Jar Binks

Jar Jar Binks is a Gungan outcast who stumbles into the lives of the Jedi during the events of ‘The Phantom Menace’. He was intended to provide comic relief for younger viewers but his clumsy antics and strange speech patterns alienated many fans. He later becomes a politician in the Galactic Senate and proposes the motion to give emergency powers to Chancellor Palpatine. This well-intentioned move is exactly what the Sith Lord needs to dismantle the Republic and create the Empire.
Rose Tico

Rose Tico is a mechanic for the Resistance who teams up with Finn for a secret mission in ‘The Last Jedi’. Her character is central to the Canto Bight storyline which many viewers felt was an unnecessary detour from the urgent fleet chase. She saves Finn from sacrificing himself at the Battle of Crait by crashing her speeder into his. Her dialogue about saving what we love rather than fighting what we hate became a major point of contention for critics of the film.
Vice Admiral Amilyn Holdo

Vice Admiral Amilyn Holdo takes command of the Resistance forces after the leadership is attacked in ‘The Last Jedi’. She refuses to share her escape plan with Poe Dameron which leads to significant internal conflict and a mutiny aboard the ship. Her character is best known for the controversial maneuver where she drives a cruiser into the First Order fleet at lightspeed. While the scene was visually stunning it caused arguments among fans about the logic of space combat in the series.
Young Anakin Skywalker

The nine-year-old version of Anakin Skywalker appears in ‘The Phantom Menace’ as a slave on the desert planet of Tatooine. He helps the heroes by winning a dangerous podrace and later destroys a Droid Control Ship by accident during a space battle. Many fans felt that his dialogue was too cheesy and that his cheerful attitude did not match the future darkness of Darth Vader. The portrayal of the character is often cited as a weak point in the first prequel film.
Nute Gunray

Nute Gunray is the Neimoidian Viceroy of the Trade Federation who orders the invasion of Naboo in ‘The Phantom Menace’. He acts as a cowardly pawn for Darth Sidious throughout the prequel trilogy and constantly relies on battle droids for protection. His villainy is often viewed as ineffective since he runs away from almost every direct confrontation with the Jedi. He meets his demise on Mustafar when the newly turned Darth Vader executes the Separatist council members.
Watto

Watto is a junk dealer in Mos Espa who owns Anakin Skywalker and his mother Shmi in ‘The Phantom Menace’. He is a Toydarian with a rough personality who forces Qui-Gon Jinn to gamble for the freedom of the boy. The character is immune to Jedi mind tricks and flies around his shop on buzzing wings while shouting at his customers. His depiction has faced retrospective criticism for relying on traits that some viewers perceive as uncomfortable stereotypes.
Ziro the Hutt

Ziro the Hutt is a flamboyant crime lord who appears in ‘The Clone Wars’ animated movie and series. He conspires against his own nephew Jabba the Hutt by kidnapping Jabba’s son in a plot to seize power. Unlike other Hutts who speak their native language Ziro speaks Galactic Basic in a high-pitched and distinctive voice. Fans often found his personality grating and felt he did not fit the menacing reputation associated with the Hutt cartels.
Rotta the Hutt

Rotta the Hutt is the infant son of Jabba the Hutt and serves as the main objective in ‘The Clone Wars’ movie. Anakin Skywalker and his Padawan Ahsoka Tano must carry the sick Huttlet in a backpack through various war zones. He is frequently referred to as Stinky and spends much of the film burping or crying while the heroes try to protect him. The storyline involving a baby Hutt was widely regarded as a strange and unappealing choice for a war drama.
L3-37

L3-37 is the droid companion of Lando Calrissian who is introduced in the film ‘Solo’. She is a self-made droid who is passionate about droid rights and constantly talks about liberation. Her consciousness is eventually uploaded into the Millennium Falcon after she is destroyed during a heist on Kessel. Some viewers found her social commentary heavy-handed and felt her personality was more annoying than charming compared to other droids in the saga.
General Hux

General Armitage Hux is a high-ranking officer in the First Order who constantly vies for approval from Supreme Leader Snoke. He starts as a terrifying fanatic in ‘The Force Awakens’ but becomes the butt of several jokes in the subsequent films. His arc concludes with him acting as a spy for the Resistance simply because he wants Kylo Ren to lose. The inconsistency in his characterization turned him from a threatening villain into a figure that many fans struggled to take seriously.
