When Suicide Squad was first coming together, the role everyone talked about was the Joker. David Ayer was directing the film, and expectations were high. This was supposed to be a darker and more daring DC movie, led by the writer behind Training Day. Before the movie ever came out, casting the Joker became one of the biggest stories in Hollywood.

According to IndieWire, the studio had a very specific actor in mind early on. Ryan Gosling was approached to take on the role of the Clown Prince of Crime. At the time, this idea caught a lot of attention, since the Joker is one of the most famous villains in movie history.

Gosling seriously considered the offer, but he didn’t accept it. The main reason was timing. During that period, he was already committed to other projects. He was working on The Nice Guys and preparing for La La Land, which would later earn him an Oscar nomination. His schedule simply did not allow room for another massive production.

There was also another concern behind his decision. Gosling has always been careful about long-term franchise contracts. Superhero movies often require actors to sign on for multiple films over many years. He reportedly did not want to be tied to one character for such a long time. He preferred to keep his options open and continue choosing different kinds of roles.

Looking back, that choice seems to have worked out well for him. After turning down the Joker, Gosling went on to star in films like First Man and later became part of the huge success of Barbie. His career stayed flexible, and he continued working with a wide range of directors and genres.

Even so, fans still talk about what could have been. The idea of Gosling playing the Joker often comes up as one of modern cinema’s biggest what-if moments. Many people wonder how his calm intensity and subtle acting style might have shaped a more grounded version of the character. In the end, the role went to Jared Leto, whose performance received mixed reactions.

Gosling’s decision shows a clear pattern in his career. He often chooses variety over franchise power. Instead of chasing the biggest box office roles, he focuses on projects that let him explore different sides of himself as an actor.

That approach is still clear today. Gosling is now preparing for the release of Project Hail Mary, a sci-fi film set to arrive in theaters on March 20. In the movie, he plays a scientist who wakes up alone in space with no memory of his mission. The film also stars Sandra Hüller and Ken Leung.

He has also finished filming a new Star Wars project titled Star Wars: Starfighter. The movie is directed by Shawn Levy and is planned for a summer 2027 release. Once again, Gosling is moving between big studio films and unique roles, showing that turning down the Joker did not slow him down at all.
