The Movie Role Matt Damon Turned Down That Was Worth a Fortune
Matt Damon has had one of the steadiest careers in Hollywood since the late 1990s. After winning an Oscar early on, he avoided the usual slowdown that hits many actors. Instead, he kept picking big roles and stayed in the spotlight. Movies like The Talented Mr. Ripley helped shape his image, and then Ocean’s Eleven and the Bourne films turned him into a global star.
By the mid 2000s, the Bourne series was huge. The first two movies were hits, and fans were eager for a third chapter. Director Paul Greengrass came back for The Bourne Ultimatum, but behind the scenes, things were not smooth at all. Damon later spoke openly about that time and made it clear how unhappy he was at the start.
In interviews over the years, Damon explained that the original script caused real panic. He said the studio rushed into setting a release date before the story was ready. According to him, the draft written by Tony Gilroy was almost impossible to read. Damon felt it was so bad that it could have damaged his career if they had filmed it as written. He even said the situation felt embarrassing and completely unplanned.
Another thing that upset him was how the writing credit played out. Damon said Gilroy tried to take full credit for the script, but after a review by the Writers Guild, the credit was split with two other writers. Damon later described that outcome as a small bit of justice. He also admitted that some of his anger came from disappointment, because he respected Gilroy’s talent and expected more from him.
Once the dust settled, Damon said he probably should not have spoken so harshly in public. Still, the stress of the Bourne schedule had real consequences. Because he was locked into finishing The Bourne Ultimatum, he had to walk away from another offer that would later become legendary.
Damon revealed this story while talking to John Krasinski, James Cameron had personally offered Damon the lead role in Avatar. A deal worth around $270 million, Krasinski later joked that if Damon had said yes, we would be having this conversation in space. Damon himself laughed it off, saying his kids were fine and he was doing OK.
James Cameron later confirmed the story and told Damon to stop worrying about it. He pointed out that Damon was already one of the biggest stars in the world and simply could not abandon his Bourne commitment. Cameron understood the choice, even though Avatar went on to become one of the biggest movies ever made.
Today, Damon’s career is still going strong. Earlier this year, he appeared with Ben Affleck in the Netflix thriller The Rip, directed by Joe Carnahan. The film premiered in January and showed Damon in a darker, more grounded role. Later this summer, he will lead Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, set for release on July 17. In the film, Damon plays Odysseus and stars alongside Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, and Zendaya.
