Sleeping Beauty is now seen as one of Disney’s most beautiful animated films, but its history is far from magical. When the movie was released on January 29, 1959, it almost pushed Walt Disney Studios into serious financial trouble.

The movie took an unusually long time to make. Work on Sleeping Beauty stretched close to ten years. Walt Disney wanted the film to look unlike anything audiences had seen before. He pushed his artists to create visuals inspired by medieval art and Gothic paintings. The goal was to make the movie feel like a moving painting rather than a typical cartoon.

That vision came at a high cost. Animators worked slowly and carefully, sometimes spending weeks on just a few seconds of animation. Because of this, the budget grew larger and larger. By the time the film was finished, it had cost around six million dollars, which was extremely high for an animated movie at the time.

When Sleeping Beauty finally reached theaters, the response was disappointing. Critics were not kind. Some said the movie looked beautiful but felt cold and distant. Even with its detailed artwork and music inspired by Tchaikovsky, audiences did not rush to see it. Ticket sales were weak, and the film failed to earn back its huge budget.

The financial loss hit Disney hard. After Sleeping Beauty, Walt Disney stepped away from princess stories for many years. The studio did not return to that kind of fairy tale until The Little Mermaid was released in 1989. For a long time, Sleeping Beauty was remembered as an expensive mistake rather than a success.

Over time, opinions slowly changed. Through TV airings and re-releases in theaters, new audiences discovered the film. People began to notice how different it looked compared to earlier Disney movies. The sharp lines, bold colors, and detailed backgrounds felt more mature and artistic. Today, many animation fans see it as one of Disney’s most impressive hand-drawn films.

While Princess Aurora is still loved, many viewers believe the real star of the movie is Maleficent. Her dramatic design, dark presence, and calm but frightening voice made her unforgettable. She became one of Disney’s most famous villains. Her popularity later led to the live-action Maleficent films starring Angelina Jolie, which gave the character a new story and a new audience.

Disney is now in a very different place, with many big projects in development. According to recent studio announcements, a third Maleficent movie is still being planned, with Angelina Jolie expected to return. Walt Disney Animation Studios is also working on a new original animated film called Hexed, set to release later this year.

Live-action remakes continue as well. A new version of Moana starring Dwayne Johnson and Catherine Laga’aia is scheduled for 2026. Disney is also preparing The Mandalorian & Grogu, which will bring Star Wars back to theaters. Through all these changes, the story of Sleeping Beauty remains a reminder that some films need time before they are truly appreciated.
