The early 2000s are back on TV, and fans of Malcolm in the Middle are getting a huge surprise. According to reports, the beloved sitcom is returning with a new four-episode special called Life’s Still Unfair.

The limited series brings the Wilkerson family back together for a big celebration, keeping the chaos and humor that made the original show a hit. Nearly the entire original cast is returning, giving fans a chance to see their favorite characters once again.

Frankie Muniz is back as Malcolm, now dealing with the challenges of adulthood. Bryan Cranston reprises his role as the quirky and lovable Hal, while Jane Kaczmarek returns as the strict and commanding Lois.

Christopher Masterson is back as the oldest brother, Francis, Justin Berfield plays Reese, and Emy Coligado returns as Francis’s wife, Piama. The revival also introduces a new generation of family members. Keeley Karsten plays Leah, Malcolm’s teenage daughter, and Vaughan Murrae takes on the role of Kelly, the youngest sibling.

Kiana Madeira joins as Malcolm’s girlfriend, Tristan, showing a new side of his adult life. Longtime fans will notice that Dewey has been recast, with Caleb Ellsworth-Clark stepping into the role for this special.

The story picks up 20 years after the original series ended. Malcolm has tried to distance himself and his daughter from the family’s chaotic antics, but he is drawn back home for Hal and Lois’s massive 40th wedding anniversary party. The event forces him to confront his old life and family.

A first-look image released from the production shows Malcolm looking stressed during a family meal, a reminder that the Wilkerson household hasn’t changed much in two decades.

Original creator Linwood Boomer has returned as writer and executive producer, making sure the show keeps its sharp humor and signature “breaking the fourth wall” moments. The revival is directed by Ken Kwapis, a veteran of the original series, and filming began in Vancouver in early 2025. The special is set to premiere on Hulu and Disney+ on April 10.

Since the original show ended in 2006, the cast has taken very different paths. Frankie Muniz has become a professional racing driver, competing full-time in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series this year.

Bryan Cranston became a global star with Breaking Bad and may take a break from acting this year to spend time with his wife in France. Justin Berfield has mostly worked behind the scenes as a producer, making this his first major acting role in years.

Jane Kaczmarek has stayed active on stage and screen, recently starring in a production of Our Town with Deaf West Theatre. Fans of the series now have a reason to celebrate as the Wilkerson family returns to screens, blending nostalgia with fresh stories and new characters.
