Tanzyn Crawford has addressed the online backlash over her casting as Tanselle in HBO’s A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, speaking openly about the criticism and sharing her thoughts on stepping into a beloved George R.R. Martin story.

The series, based on Martin’s Dunk & Egg novellas, follows Ser Duncan the Tall (Peter Claffey) as he competes in the Ashford Meadow tourney and becomes involved in the dangerous Trial of Seven.

The story mostly focuses on Duncan and his young squire Egg (Dexter Sol Ansell), but Tanselle, a puppeteer and Duncan’s brief love interest, provides a softer, more feminine perspective amid the otherwise male-centered plot.

Crawford told Wonderland that entering such a well-loved universe was intimidating. “It was intimidating to step into something that people are so connected to, love so much, and have a lot of opinions about,” she said. “I definitely did get some negativity around race, but at the end of the day, I’m employed – and I’m following my dreams.”

She also shared that George R.R. Martin approved of her casting, telling her, “You’re exactly what I pictured.” For Crawford, Tanselle’s role is important because it adds balance to the story.

“The beauty of Tanselle in this series is she’s a softer outlet. The rest of the show is very manly, quite harsh and brutal,” she explained. “I think she’s self-confident and has her own little passions and worlds that are very separate from everyone else. Of course, her storyline involves Dunk, but she has her own thing going on.”

While Tanselle does not appear in the second novella, The Sworn Sword, rumors suggest she may play a role in events in Dorne, possibly influencing Duncan’s future journey.

Crawford handled the criticism with grace and confidence. Casting debates happen often, especially with adaptations of popular series, but her focus on pursuing her dreams and honoring the character is admirable.
