Before Anthony Hopkins became a global film star, he had already built an impressive career on stage. He was a major figure in British theatre during the 1980s and won a prestigious Laurence Olivier Award in 1985 for his role in the play Pravda.

That award was especially meaningful because the legendary Laurence Olivier had personally encouraged him to join the National Theatre when he was just starting out as an actor.

By the 1980s, Hopkins was making a name for himself in film as well. He appeared in the 1977 war epic A Bridge Too Far and the 1980 biographical drama The Elephant Man, directed by David Lynch.

Both films were well received, but not all of his projects went smoothly. His 1980 comedy-drama A Change of Seasons was a disappointment both critically and at the box office. The atmosphere on set was tense, largely because of real-life clashes with his co-star Shirley MacLaine.

Hopkins would later describe MacLaine as “the most obnoxious actress I have ever worked with.” When asked about this in a 2014 interview with the New York Post, MacLaine admitted that the feeling was mutual.

She said, “I didn’t like him either, but he was on the wagon at that time, and it was hard on him.” Their clash became part of Hollywood lore, though it’s clear both actors were under a lot of personal and professional pressure at the time.

It wasn’t just Hopkins who found MacLaine difficult to work with. Director Don Siegel, who collaborated with her on the western Two Mules for Sister Sarah, once said she was “too unfeminine and has too many balls.

She’s very, very hard.” Despite her reputation for being challenging on set, MacLaine built a legendary career spanning seven decades, becoming one of Hollywood’s most iconic stars.

Hopkins, now 88, continues to remain active in the entertainment industry. He recently celebrated 50 years of sobriety and still seeks out challenging roles. He appeared in the 2025 thriller Locked and the historical series Those About to Die.

Fans are also looking forward to seeing him in Guy Ritchie’s upcoming black comedy Wife & Dog, as well as leading the cast of The Housekeeper alongside Helena Bonham Carter. Shirley MacLaine, now 91, has largely stepped away from public life.

She last appeared on screen in the 2022 film American Dreamer and has spent the past few years focusing on her personal legacy and enjoying a quieter retirement after decades in the spotlight.

Even with their past clashes, both MacLaine and Hopkins remain celebrated figures in film, each leaving an unmistakable mark on the industry. Their stories remind us that even legendary careers can include tough moments behind the scenes, but talent and dedication often outlast any conflict.
