Rosamund Pike recently looked back at one of the most difficult moments from the early part of her career. During an appearance on the How to Fail with Elizabeth Day podcast, the actress spoke openly about her experience working on the 2005 action film Doom, where she starred alongside Dwayne Johnson.

At the time, Pike had been filming Pride and Prejudice and was enjoying the calm and traditional setting of that project. She described how different things felt when she suddenly received an offer to join the film adaptation of the popular video game Doom. The shift from a classic period drama to a science-fiction action movie happened very quickly.

While remembering that moment, Pike explained that she felt very confident when the offer first came in. When I was making Pride & Prejudice, and I was having great fun in my cornfields in my bonnet, I got a call to be in an action franchise, she said during the podcast interview.

The idea of moving from one project to another seemed simple in her mind at the time. She joked that she believed the physical challenges of the action film would not be too hard for her.

They were making a cinema version, a narrative version of the video game Doom. And I think in my bonnet, in my field of hay bales, ‘Yeah, I can do anything. I can jump on this hay bale in my crinoline, so I can certainly go and kill some zombies on Mars,’ she recalled.

But once she arrived on the set of Doom, Pike quickly realised the reality was very different. The production involved intense training, heavy action scenes, and a serious atmosphere around the video game franchise.

She admitted that she felt completely out of place in that environment. Speaking honestly about that moment, Pike said, So suddenly I’m in this film with The Rock, and I realise how utterly ill-equipped I am to be an action star.

She explained that the set felt very intense and that she struggled to find her footing there. I was out of my comfort zone, out of my league, out of my depth, she added. The film did not perform well after its release.

Doom received poor reviews and did not make a strong impact at the box office. Pike said the response made the experience even more difficult to process. Looking back, she did not hide how she feels about the movie today. It was an absolute bomb. I mean, I probably could have ended my career, she said on the podcast.

Pike was also blunt about her opinion of the final result. It was just probably one of the worst films ever made. I mean, it was a catastrophe. I don’t read the reviews, but you get the sense like you’re lucky to have survived that one.

Even though that period was challenging, Pike’s career did not stall. In the years that followed, she went on to deliver several acclaimed performances. One of her most famous roles came in the film Gone Girl, which earned her an Academy Award nomination and brought widespread praise from critics.

More recently, Pike has taken on a major role in the fantasy series The Wheel of Time on Amazon Prime Video. She plays Moiraine Damodred, a powerful character who guides the story through a complex magical world. The series has become a large project for the actress, and she is closely involved in the production.

Fans of the show are now waiting for the fourth season, which is expected to continue the story from the popular book series that inspired it. Pike’s performance has been a central part of the show’s success.

Her career path shows how an early setback does not always define what comes next. The difficult experience she described from Doom has become just one chapter in a career that later brought major roles, awards recognition, and long-running television success.
