Demi Moore’s career has taken many turns since her breakout role in A Few Good Men in 1992. After starring in major hits in the ’90s, she stepped back from Hollywood following G.I. Jane to focus on raising her three daughters in Hailey, Idaho.

During this time, she only appeared occasionally, like in the 2000 film Passion of Mind, directed by Belgian filmmaker Alain Berliner. She played a woman with dissociative identity disorder, and while critics praised her performance, the movie didn’t find much of an audience.

Moore later explained that personal struggles, including her mother’s death and her divorce from Bruce Willis, kept her from fully connecting with the project, according to reports.

She made a bigger return in 2003 with Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle, playing a villain written just for her. Her swimsuit scene drew a lot of media attention, and Drew Barrymore said Moore’s role “upstaged” the heroines.

Even with the attention, Moore said the response made her question her place in the movie world. The film earned $259 million worldwide, but Moore again went on a break, focusing on modeling for brands like Versace and Helena Rubinstein, according to reports from that period.

In the mid-2000s, Moore appeared in a mix of dramas and ensemble films. She starred in Half Light (2006) as a grieving novelist and returned to work with Emilio Estevez in Bobby, portraying an alcoholic singer.

The cast of Bobby earned a Screen Actors Guild nomination for Best Cast. Moore also appeared with Michael Caine in Flawless (2007), playing an executive involved in a diamond heist, and took on a dark role in Mr. Brooks, playing a police officer tracking a serial killer.

Critics like Peter Travers praised her for bringing depth to these characters, even if some storylines were seen as weak. Moore also started working behind the camera. In 2008, she directed a short film called Streak, starring her daughter Rumer, which screened at the Nashville Film Festival.

She appeared in films like Happy Tears and The Joneses (2009), with critics praising her performances and the satire in the latter. Moore kept acting in smaller roles through films like Bunraku (2010) and Margin Call (2011), acting alongside Kevin Spacey and Paul Bettany.

She even directed a segment of the Lifetime anthology Five, earning a Directors Guild of America nomination. In the 2010s, Moore mostly appeared in smaller roles, playing mothers, wives, and women facing challenges.

She appeared in films like LOL (2012), Very Good Girls (2013), Forsaken (2015), and Blind (2017). She also had a recurring role on the TV series Empire and appeared in the comedy Rough Night (2017), where critic Alonso Duralde called her “wonderfully skeevy.”

She took on international work too, starring in the Hindi film Love Sonia (2018). That same year, she released her memoir Inside Out, which hit number one on The New York Times nonfiction bestseller list.

More recently, Moore has embraced a variety of projects. She starred in Songbird (2020), appeared in Brave New World, and led the podcast Dirty Diana, exploring sexuality with a sex-positive message.

In 2022, she received praise for her role in Please Baby Please and had a cameo in The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent. In 2024, she returned to prominence with Feud: Capote vs. The Swans and the drama series Landman.

Her performance in The Substance (2024), directed by Coralie Fargeat, earned widespread acclaim. Critics like Nicholas Barber of the BBC called it “her best big-screen role in decades,” and Phil de Semlyen of Time Out praised her fearless performance.

Moore won the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy and the Critics’ Choice Movie Award for Best Actress, and she earned nominations for the Academy Award and BAFTA.

She is set to star in Boots Riley’s I Love Boosters and Strange Arrivals, the latter telling the story of the first reported alien abduction involving Betty and Barney Hill. In 2025, People magazine named her the “World’s Most Beautiful,” a recognition of her lasting influence.

Looking at her career from A Few Good Men to now, it’s clear that Moore has never shied away from taking risks or reinventing herself. She continues to find new ways to challenge herself both in front of and behind the camera.
