According to a reflective interview shared by Halle Berry, the actress has once again addressed long-running rumors about her Oscar-winning film Monster’s Ball. The 2001 drama, directed by Marc Forster, is still widely discussed for its intense and emotional performances, especially Berry’s role opposite Billy Bob Thornton.

Berry explained that over the years, a persistent rumor has followed the film, suggesting that one of the intimate scenes between her and Thornton was not acted out at all. She said the speculation has continued for decades and often overshadows the actual work that went into the performance.

She said, There’s an urban legend that we were really fu****g. I’ve heard it, and it’s just not true. It’s secretly driven me mad all these years. The actress added that the gossip became especially intense when tabloids began linking her and Thornton in real life.

At the time, Thornton was married to Angelina Jolie, which added even more attention to the rumor despite no evidence behind it. Berry said the situation made her feel like her acting skills were being dismissed. She explained, You can’t just be a good actor. She also added, I’ll do a lot of things, but I’m not gonna sleep with your man.

Monster’s Ball went on to become one of Berry’s most important films. Her performance as Leticia Musgrove earned her the Academy Award for Best Actress, making her the first Black woman to win in that category.

Even with that achievement, she said the conversation around the film often circles back to the same misunderstanding about the on-screen intimacy. She clarified that everything seen in the film was scripted and directed by Marc Forster, and that the goal was to show emotional truth rather than real-life action.

The scene was meant to reflect grief, vulnerability, and human connection, not real intimacy. Outside of revisiting her past work, Berry continues to stay active in film and advocacy. She is currently focusing on projects that highlight women’s health and stronger representation in Hollywood.

She stars in the heist thriller Crime 101 alongside Chris Hemsworth and Mark Ruffalo. She is also preparing for the film Fleur, where she will play a woman who moves to Paris to rebuild her life.

Even more than twenty years later, Monster’s Ball remains one of the most talked about films in Berry’s career, both for its impact and the misconceptions that still surround it.
