Cinemacon Surprise – Chris Evans Reunites with RDJ in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Reveal
Avengers: Doomsday made a strong impact at CinemaCon, where a short onstage moment between Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr. quickly became the main topic of discussion.
Evans joined Downey on stage along with Kevin Feige and directors Anthony Russo and Joe Russo. As soon as he walked out, Evans greeted Downey with “Hey pal!”, which got an immediate reaction from the crowd. The two then leaned in as if they were about to hug, but stopped at the last second. The moment was clearly planned and worked as a nod to their past in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
According to reports from the event, that short exchange was enough to set off major buzz. It hinted at a different dynamic this time. Evans is back as Steve Rogers, while Downey takes on the role of Doctor Doom. The contrast between those characters suggests they may not be on the same side in the story.

The film is set to arrive on December 18, and is being positioned as a key chapter in Marvel’s Phase Six. It will lead directly into Avengers: Secret Wars, which is expected to continue the larger storyline. The plot focuses on multiple universes colliding, bringing together different teams and characters from across the franchise.
Marvel Studios is producing the film with AGBO, while Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures will handle distribution. The project is directed by the Russo Brothers, who return after earlier Avengers films, with a script written by Michael Waldron and Stephen McFeely.

The movie brings together a large group of characters. The Avengers, Wakandans, Fantastic Four, X-Men, and newer heroes all appear in the same story. The events take place after Thunderbolts* and build toward a major crossover.
Behind the scenes, the project went through big changes. Marvel originally planned a different direction with a focus on Kang the Conqueror. But after legal issues involving Jonathan Majors, the studio shifted its plans. The story was reworked, the Russo Brothers returned, and Downey was cast as Doctor Doom. These changes were announced in 2024.
Filming started in April 2025 at Pinewood Studios in England and finished in September. Some scenes were also shot in Bahrain. The cast includes both longtime MCU actors and performers from earlier X-Men films, showing how wide the story has become.
“Hey pal!” may have been a simple line, but it helped set the tone. It reminded fans of the past while also hinting that things will not be the same this time.
Marvel is clearly leaning on nostalgia while also trying to change the direction of its story. Bringing back familiar faces in new roles is a risky move, but it could also be what the franchise needs right now. What do you think about Chris Evans returning and Robert Downey Jr. playing Doctor Doom? Let me know your thoughts in the comments.
