Tom Cruise is officially set to come back as Pete “Maverick” Mitchell in a third “Top Gun” movie. The announcement was made by Paramount Pictures during its CinemaCon presentation in Las Vegas. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer will also return for the new film.

The sequel continues the story from 2022’s “Top Gun: Maverick,” which was directed by Joseph Kosinski. Work on the next chapter had already been reported earlier, with writer Ehren Kruger attached to the project. Kruger previously worked on “Maverick” alongside Eric Warren Singer and Christopher McQuarrie.

The second film became one of the biggest box office hits in recent years. It earned around 1.5 billion dollars worldwide from a production budget of about 170 million. Its release came at a time when cinemas were still recovering from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, and it helped bring large audiences back to theaters.

“Maverick” brought Cruise back to the role he first played in 1986. In the film, his character returns to train a new group of elite Navy pilots for a dangerous mission. The story also focused on his complicated relationship with Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw, played by Miles Teller. Rooster is the son of Maverick’s late friend Goose, who died in the original film. The mission ultimately brings the group together as they complete it successfully.

The cast of “Maverick” featured both returning stars and new actors. Alongside Cruise and Teller, the film included Glen Powell, Monica Barbaro, Lewis Pullman, Danny Ramirez, Jay Ellis, Greg Tarzan Davis, and Manny Jacinto as young pilots. Supporting roles were played by Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Ed Harris, Charles Parnell, and Bashir Salahuddin. The film also marked the final appearance of Val Kilmer as Iceman. Kilmer passed away in 2025.

Talk of a third movie has been building for several years. Miles Teller mentioned in 2022 that he had discussed a possible sequel centered on his character Rooster. By 2024, reports confirmed early development of “Top Gun 3.” In 2025, Christopher McQuarrie was revealed to be working on the script. Now, in 2026, Paramount has confirmed that the film is officially moving forward.

Details about the plot and release date have not yet been shared.

This is clearly a major move for Paramount, especially after the huge success of “Maverick.” Bringing Tom Cruise back again shows how strong this franchise still is. At the same time, it will be interesting to see if the story can match the impact of the last film or if it will feel like a repeat. What do you think about “Top Gun 3” happening?
