Sandra Bullock (61) Joins Instagram, Gains 5 Million Followers in Just Three Days
Sandra Bullock has finally entered the world of Instagram, and her arrival has already made a big impact. According to CNBC’s Changemakers 2026 event in New York City on April 16, the actress spoke openly about why she avoided social media for so long and what changed her mind.
During a conversation with CNBC’s Julia Boorstin and Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group co-CEO Pamela Abdy, Bullock explained that she never really planned to be on social platforms. She said, “It didn’t feel like it would ever be my thing.” She also shared that she had only used social media quietly in the past, mainly to observe and shop, not to post publicly.
The turning point came as she prepared for the upcoming film “Practical Magic 2.” Abdy encouraged her to consider joining Instagram as part of the film’s promotion. Bullock said she needed time to think it through and joked about her careful approach. She said, “I’m not spontaneous. I need a plan. I need to think about it. How does that affect what I can contribute? How badly can I f— it up? Which, that will come, and I’m just going to lean into that.”
She also made it clear she did not want to follow typical celebrity social media trends. Bullock told the audience she had spoken with the studio about keeping things simple and real. She said, “OK, talk to me, tell me what you see, because if I need to be able to make myself look like an idiot and have fun, I will not be doing selfies or makeup tutorials.” She added that she is open to learning as she goes.
Bullock even joked about where this new step could lead, saying she might explore other ideas in the future, including a possible makeup line if things go well after the film release.
Her appearance at the CNBC event came during a busy time in her career. She is currently promoting “Practical Magic 2,” which is set to come out in September 2026. At CinemaCon in Las Vegas earlier that week, she appeared alongside co-star Nicole Kidman and shared more about the film, including early story hints and playful moments on stage.
Bullock also made her official Instagram debut around the same time. Her first post quickly gained attention and brought in millions of followers in a very short time. One of her first clips showed a simple magical-style moment with a blender turning on by itself. She captioned it, “Midnight somewhere…”
She later shared behind-the-scenes content from CinemaCon with Kidman, calling them “Owens sisters.”
The information about Bullock’s comments and appearances comes from CNBC’s Changemakers 2026 event coverage and related reporting from CinemaCon in Las Vegas.
Sandra Bullock’s approach to social media is clearly cautious, but she seems open to learning how to use it in her own way while promoting her new film.
