‘The Super Mario Galaxy’ Movie Digital Release Date Revealed
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is expected to arrive on digital platforms on May 5, according to a report from When to Stream. The film only hit cinemas on April 1, meaning the move to digital would come roughly one month after its theatrical debut. The studio behind the film, Universal Pictures, has not officially confirmed the date yet, so it could still change.
The movie is directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic and continues the story from The Super Mario Bros. Movie released in 2023. It brings back the main voice cast, including Chris Pratt as Mario, Charlie Day as Luigi, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, and Jack Black as Bowser.
This sequel expands the story into space and introduces new characters and bigger stakes. Bowser Jr., voiced by Benny Safdie, plays a key role after kidnapping Princess Rosalina, voiced by Brie Larson. The story also reveals that Rosalina is connected to Peach as a long-lost sister. Mario and Luigi then join Peach and Toad on an intergalactic mission to rescue her, with help from Yoshi, voiced by Donald Glover.
The report says the film will be released through premium video on demand, with a price of $24.99 for purchase. Rental options are expected to be around $19.99 for a 48-hour viewing window on platforms like Apple TV, Prime Video, and YouTube.
Even though the digital release may seem early, the movie has performed strongly in theaters. According to data cited from The Numbers, it has earned more than $831 million worldwide, making it one of the biggest box office hits of the year.
Universal Pictures has been adjusting its release strategy in recent years. The studio now generally keeps films in theaters for at least five weekends before moving them to digital platforms. This change was made to balance theatrical performance with home viewing demand. In comparison, earlier releases sometimes reached digital platforms much faster.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is still playing in cinemas and continues to attract audiences. While fans wait for official confirmation from Universal, the reported May 5 digital release suggests it will soon be widely available at home.
