IMAX reported lower revenue and profit in the first quarter of 2026, even though several major films helped bring audiences to its premium screens.

The company earned about $81 million in the quarter ending in March. That is lower than the same period last year, when it brought in $86.7 million. Net income also fell, dropping to $6.2 million from $8.2 million a year earlier. The results were still slightly better than Wall Street expected, but overall performance was down compared to 2025.

A big reason for the decline was a weaker global box office compared to last year’s strong results in China. In 2025, the Chinese hit Ne Zha 2 delivered massive earnings for IMAX. This year, no single film matched that level of performance.

Even so, IMAX did see strong results from several major releases. Films like Avatar: Fire and Ash and Project Hail Mary performed well on IMAX screens. Other titles such as Pegasus 3 and Scream 7 also contributed to the quarter.

Project Hail Mary stood out in particular. The film was shot with IMAX cameras and earned about $92 million globally from IMAX screenings alone. That made up a large share of its total box office.

IMAX CFO Natasha Fernandes pointed to the strong performance of the film while discussing the results. She said, “The breakout success of ‘Project Hail Mary’ — a Filmed For Imax release that more than doubled our initial box office projections — demonstrates what a well-crafted blockbuster can achieve when it leans fully into the Imax platform.”

She also said the company expects more strong releases ahead, with several major films scheduled that are expected to use IMAX technology.

For the quarter, total global IMAX box office reached $260 million, which is down 13% from the same time last year. The drop is mostly linked to the absence of a huge breakout hit like last year’s Chinese box office leader.

Despite the decline, IMAX is still projecting a strong year ahead, with expectations of record global box office totals driven by upcoming blockbusters.

Company CEO Rich Gelfond also gave a health update during the report. He said he is recovering after a bout of pneumonia and is slowly returning to work. He stated, “My recovery from pneumonia is progressing well. I have been discharged from the hospital and will continue to focus on my health in the coming weeks.”

He also confirmed he is getting back into leadership duties while the management team continues day-to-day operations.

This report shows how dependent IMAX still is on a few major global releases to boost results each quarter. Even strong films may not always be enough if there is no massive breakout hit like in previous years. What do you think about IMAX’s performance this quarter and its future outlook?
