Amazon’s Controversial OpenAI Movie Reportedly Casts Sam Altman as Unflattering Figure
A new Hollywood film about the fight between Elon Musk and Sam Altman is shaping up to arrive in theaters in 2027, and early reports suggest it will not present either tech leader in a flattering way.
The movie, titled “Artificial,” is being directed by Luca Guadagnino and is being developed under Amazon MGM. It focuses on the early conflicts inside the world of artificial intelligence and the tensions between major tech figures. Andrew Garfield plays Sam Altman, while Ike Barinholtz takes on the role of Elon Musk.
According to sources speaking to Page Six Hollywood, the studio is planning an early 2027 release. One reason for the timing is to avoid competition with another upcoming tech drama film that covers similar territory and features a different set of real-life Silicon Valley figures.
The film has not been shown to the public yet. It has also not been seen by Sam Altman himself. This has added some tension around the project, especially since early information suggests he may not be pleased with how he is portrayed.
People familiar with the production say that both Musk and Altman are shown in a negative light in the story. The focus is not on making them heroes or villains in a simple way, but the tone reportedly leans toward showing them as difficult and flawed figures.
Interestingly, the central figure of the movie may not be either of the two well-known tech leaders. Instead, attention is said to shift toward Ilya Sutskever, one of the OpenAI co-founders. He is played by Yura Borisov. Early reports suggest his character becomes the emotional center of the story and is treated as someone who suffers the most consequences during the events portrayed.
The script has gone through several changes during development. Some early industry chatter suggested the writing process was unstable, with major rewrites happening once the director became more involved. Amazon ultimately moved forward with the project after acquiring it at an early stage.
There is also added real-world context making the film more sensitive. OpenAI and Amazon have recently entered into a major business partnership involving large-scale investment. Because of that, the film’s portrayal of key figures connected to OpenAI is drawing extra attention.
Sources say no outside viewers, including the real Sam Altman, have seen the final version yet. The studio is currently preparing test screenings as it moves closer to locking the film.
Another tech-focused film is also in development at Sony, which explores similar themes around social media and big tech leadership. That project is expected to release later in 2026, meaning audiences could see multiple competing stories about Silicon Valley power struggles within a short time.
For now, “Artificial” remains one of the more closely watched upcoming films in Hollywood, mainly because of its real-life inspirations and the high-profile names involved both on screen and in real life.
This kind of film always creates tension because it mixes real people with dramatic storytelling. It can be interesting to watch, but it also risks simplifying complex real-world events into entertainment. It will be worth seeing how balanced the final movie actually feels once it comes out.
