Joe Russo Breaks Silence on ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Spoilers and Has a Message for Fans
Marvel’s biggest productions often come with huge secrecy around every detail, and that pressure has only grown as fan theories and online leaks spread faster than ever. Behind the scenes, the people working closest to these films say it takes serious effort to keep things under control.
That’s something Joe Russo and Angela Russo-Otstot understand very well. The pair, who are part of AGBO and heavily involved in major Marvel projects including the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday, spoke about spoiler culture during a recent interview with Metro at the Sands International Film Festival. Their comments come as production continues on the film, which is expected to be one of the biggest releases in the MCU’s next chapter.
Joe Russo said managing spoilers has become more complicated over time, especially with how quickly information spreads online. He pointed out that audiences want surprises, but at the same time, constant policing of spoilers can go too far.
He explained, “On one hand, audiences want to be surprised, and that’s part of what makes the theatrical experience exciting. On the other hand, it can become a little over-policed, where people are anxious about engaging with anything.”
The Russo brothers are no strangers to handling secrecy at this level. They previously directed Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, two films that were known for extremely tight security and carefully controlled reveals. For Doomsday, the situation is similar, with filming still underway and multiple storylines being kept under wraps.
Angela Russo-Otstot also spoke about how much planning goes into protecting story details. She said the team thinks carefully about how fans will experience each moment and how to avoid ruining key surprises before release. According to her, this is especially important when working with a franchise as widely followed as Marvel.
She said, “We spend a lot of time thinking about the audience… a lot of thought goes into those twists and turns and reveals when it comes to not spoiling it for others. We’re big believers in that and protecting the sanctity of the experience for everybody to enjoy it in the same way.”
Angela also noted that part of the challenge is accepting that not everything can be controlled. With large-scale productions filmed across multiple locations and teams, leaks are always a possibility. Still, she said the goal is to keep major surprises intact for audiences watching in cinemas.
Joe Russo echoed that idea, adding that while spoiler culture can create pressure, filmmakers ultimately have to focus on making a strong story that works even if parts of it are known ahead of time.
He said, “You can’t control everything. You have to focus on making something that holds up beyond the initial surprise.”
The conversation also touched on past Marvel leaks and how the studio has tightened security over the years. High-profile spoilers in earlier MCU films led to stricter rules around scripts and on-set access, something now standard across major productions.
With Avengers: Doomsday still in production and a global fanbase watching closely, the balance between secrecy and online speculation remains a constant challenge. For Joe Russo and Angela Russo-Otstot, it’s part of the job that never really goes away, especially when dealing with one of the most closely watched film franchises in the world.
