Theo Rossi is fueling speculation about his future in Matt Reeves’ The Batman universe, with new comments that hint at a possible transformation into one of Batman’s most well-known villains.

Rossi currently plays Dr. Julian Rush in The Penguin, part of the same crime-focused world that includes The Batman. His character works at Arkham Asylum and has a complex relationship with Sofia Falcone, played by Cristin Milioti. While Julian Rush was introduced as an original character, fans quickly began connecting him to classic Batman lore.

A major reason for that theory comes from visual clues in the series. Items shown in his office, including a mask and a glove with sharp, needle-like details, have led viewers to suspect that the character could eventually become Scarecrow, also known as Dr. Jonathan Crane.

Rossi addressed the fan theories during a recent interview at SXSW while promoting another project. He did not confirm anything, but he did not dismiss the idea either. He said there were many creative decisions happening behind the scenes and pointed out that the show included multiple hidden details and references.

He also commented directly on the speculation, saying, “Scarecrow, yeah.” When asked whether he was ever considered for the role officially, he remained vague and added, “Who knows what will happen one day…”

The actor emphasized that many small details in The Penguin were intentional and that fans have not noticed everything yet. He also made it clear he is proud of the show and the team behind it.

At this point, Rossi has not been announced as part of The Batman Part 2, which is currently in development under director Matt Reeves. The sequel will continue the story of Robert Pattinson’s Batman and expand the same universe introduced in The Batman and The Penguin. However, his absence from the cast list does not rule out a future appearance.

The direction of the franchise also leaves room for long-term character development. Arkham Asylum is already an important part of the story world, and both the series and films have explored characters tied to it. This makes Julian Rush a natural candidate for further evolution within the storyline.

There are also ongoing discussions about future spin-offs and additional projects set in the same universe, which could provide space for character arcs that are still developing.

The Scarecrow theory is one of the more interesting ideas in this version of the Batman universe. The hints are subtle but clearly intentional, and Rossi’s comments keep the door open without confirming anything. It feels like the kind of slow build that could pay off later if the writers choose to go in that direction. What do you think? Should Theo Rossi become Scarecrow in this universe, or should his character stay original? Share your thoughts in the comments.
