Wilmer Valderrama Breaks Down Surprise Gibbs Ending on ‘NCIS’
A major twist in the penultimate episode of NCIS Season 23 has sparked new discussion among fans, especially around the return of old methods linked to Gibbs and the team’s approach to justice.
The episode centers on a dangerous case involving former Army CID director Rogers, who is facing serious charges including arms trafficking and conspiracy. He is also connected to the death of NCIS Director Vance. While Rogers is on trial, chaos breaks out at the courthouse when an attack forces the team to step in and protect him. The situation quickly falls apart, and Rogers manages to escape before being captured again.
Even after being taken back into custody, Rogers is eventually placed into witness protection as part of a deal involving the information he provided. However, this outcome frustrates agent Parker, played by Gary Cole, who is unhappy that someone tied to Vance’s death may avoid full consequences.
The story takes a darker turn when Parker decides to act outside normal procedure, following what is described as a “Gibbs-style” approach. This moment is connected to the influence of Mark Harmon’s character, even though he does not appear on screen.
In the final moments, Rogers is later killed in a sniper attack during transport. The shot is shown to come from extreme distance, suggesting a highly skilled shooter. The episode implies that Parker, with indirect help linked to Gibbs, was involved in making that outcome happen, effectively closing the case tied to Vance’s death.
Actor Wilmer Valderrama, who plays Nick Torres, spoke about the episode and how it reflects his character’s mindset. He explained that Torres has always struggled with strict rules and procedures within NCIS. Over time, he has adapted, but still prefers a more direct approach when dealing with criminals.
Valderrama said Torres feels most comfortable when rules are bent in pursuit of justice. He also suggested that future episodes will continue to explore this side of the character as the season moves forward.
He was also asked about Torres’ reaction to the events in the episode, including whether he would have acted differently in a key moment involving Rogers. Valderrama said Torres likely would have taken the shot without hesitation, even if it meant risking his badge. He described Torres as someone who believes in justice “at all costs.”
The actor also hinted that bigger storylines are still ahead for Torres, including developments in his relationships with other team members.
This episode shows how the series continues to balance procedural storytelling with personal conflict inside the team. It also raises questions about how far characters should go when official systems fail. What do you think about the ending and Gibbs-style justice in the show? Share your thoughts in the comments.
