Ian McKellen has once again been asked one of the internet’s most debated fantasy questions: who would win in a fight between Gandalf and Dumbledore. The question comes up often because both characters are seen as powerful, wise wizards from two of the biggest fantasy franchises in film and books.

McKellen is best known for playing Gandalf in Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy, a role he also reprised in The Hobbit. His performance made Gandalf one of the most iconic characters in modern fantasy cinema. Because of that strong connection, McKellen is frequently asked to compare his character with others, especially Harry Potter’s Albus Dumbledore.

According to The Guardian, McKellen gave a direct and playful answer when asked the question. He said, “Why on earth would they be fighting? But Gandy, of course, would win. The original wizard.” His response shows he clearly stands firmly on Gandalf’s side, while also brushing off the idea of the two characters ever needing to fight.

Both Gandalf and Dumbledore are often compared because they share a similar archetype: older, wise, powerful magical mentors with long beards and a strong moral presence. However, their origins are very different. Gandalf comes from J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth mythology, where he is actually a divine being sent to guide and protect the world, while Dumbledore is a highly skilled human wizard in the Harry Potter universe.

McKellen was even considered for the role of Dumbledore after Richard Harris passed away, but he turned it down. Reports say this was due to past criticism from Harris about McKellen’s acting, which made him uncomfortable about taking over the role. The part later went to Michael Gambon, who continued as Dumbledore for the rest of the original film series.

Outside of this debate, McKellen continues to stay active in major fantasy franchises. He is set to return in upcoming projects like The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, directed by Andy Serkis, and also appears in Avengers: Doomsday. Despite new roles, Gandalf remains the character most closely associated with him, which is why questions like this still follow him years later.
