A new reaction video has brought together two Carleton University scholars, Dr. Jacqueline Neal and Dr. Yuki, as they watched and discussed the trailer for Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film The Odyssey.

The two scholars introduced themselves at the start of the video, explaining their academic backgrounds in Greek and Roman studies at Carleton University. Dr. Neal noted her focus on Roman history and film, while Dr. Yuki explained his work on Homer. They also made it clear they had not discussed the trailer with each other beforehand and were reacting in real time, as seen in the recorded session.

As the trailer played, both academics focused heavily on how classical history and myth were being represented. Early in the discussion, they pointed out that some battlefield imagery looked less like ancient Greece and more like World War I visuals. , “this doesn’t really look like classical antiquity. This really has a World War I type of view to me.” They compared the burial style shown in the trailer with historical Greek practices, suggesting that mass graves or cremation were more likely in the ancient world.

They also discussed possible references to Homeric stories, including the Trojan War and famous figures like Achilles and Agamemnon. The conversation moved through several moments where they tried to identify characters, settings, and mythological references, while also questioning whether some scenes might actually be flashbacks or symbolic reinterpretations.

A major part of their analysis focused on how Nolan might be changing the perspective of The Odyssey. They explained that the trailer suggests a more personal and emotional viewpoint of Odysseus, compared to the original epic poems, which often take a more distant narrative approach. One of them noted that this version feels more intimate and centered on Odysseus himself rather than the wider mythological world around him.

The scholars also discussed well-known creatures and events from the original myth, including the Cyclops Polyphemus, the Sirens, and Scylla and Charybdis. They pointed out that some of these elements appear briefly in the trailer, but it is still unclear whether the film will treat them as literal monsters or symbolic parts of the story.

As the reaction continued, they also talked about how Christopher Nolan’s previous films might influence this adaptation. They mentioned his interest in time, memory, and nonlinear storytelling, suggesting that The Odyssey could include similar narrative complexity, even if the trailer appears straightforward at first glance.

Toward the end of the discussion, both professors reflected on how mythological stories like The Odyssey have always changed over time through retellings, adaptations, and reinterpretations. They compared modern film adaptations to older variations of Greek myths, noting that each generation reshapes the story in its own way.
