Book-Based Netflix Thriller Takes Over 2026 as the Year’s Biggest Streaming Hit
Netflix is seeing major success in 2026 as its limited thriller series His & Hers has become the most-watched show of the year so far and quietly joined all-time top 10, according to Netflix viewership reports shared five months after its January premiere.
The series is based on the 2020 novel His & Hers by author Alice Feeney. The TV adaptation was developed by William Oldroyd, with Dee Johnson serving as showrunner. It was released as a six-episode limited series on Netflix and quickly climbed the platform’s global charts after launch.
The show features a well-known cast including Tessa Thompson, Jon Bernthal, Pablo Schreiber, Marin Ireland, Sunita Mani, Rebecca Rittenhouse, Crystal Fox, Chris Bauer, and Poppy Liu. The story follows two estranged spouses, Anna and Jack, who find themselves connected to the same murder case but on opposite sides of the investigation.

In the series, Anna is a former reporter who returns to her hometown in Georgia after a local murder pushes her back into investigative work. At the same time, her estranged husband Jack is the detective assigned to the case, which creates tension as both begin to suspect each other of hiding important secrets.
Tessa Thompson and Jon Bernthal lead the story as Anna and Jack, with their characters caught between personal history and a growing murder investigation. The plot expands as more suspects appear, making the case more complicated as the episodes go on.
Author Alice Feeney previously spoke about seeing her book adapted for television, saying, “When His & Hers lands on Netflix, it will be seven years since I wrote the book in my shed… What a journey it has been. I love this story with all of my dark heart, I love the TV series too, and everyone who helped make this dream come true.”

Even with its strong streaming performance, the series received mixed critical reactions. It holds a 70% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, while audience scores sit at 62%. Reviews praised the performances of Thompson and Bernthal, while opinions were divided on the pacing and overall story execution. However, many viewers highlighted the ending as one of the strongest parts of the series.
