According to Rotten Tomatoes, the film currently sits at 47% on the Tomatometer based on 30 reviews, while audiences appear more positive, giving it an 83% Popcornmeter score from over 100 verified ratings.

The film, released in the United States on May 15, 2026, is directed, written, and produced by Guy Ritchie and produced by Black Bear Pictures. It stars Henry Cavill, Jake Gyllenhaal, Eiza González, Kristofer Hivju, Fisher Stevens, and Rosamund Pike.

Critics have been sharply split on the film. Some praised parts of the cast and energy, while others called it dull or overly familiar. William Bibbiani of TheWrap gave a negative review, writing, “It’s a one way ticket to Dullsville. Population: this poor, poor cast.”

On the more positive side, Thelma Adams of AARP Movies for Grownups gave it a 3/5 rating and said, “This lethal ensemble thriller is fun without slipping into slapstick… After the first-hour of largely stylish set-up, the movie bursts into life in the final half-hour.”

Other critics were far less impressed. Eric Goldman of IGN wrote, “Filled with never-ending voice over and exposition… In the Grey is a low point for director Guy Ritchie.” Johnny Oleksinski of the New York Post also criticized the film’s lack of energy, saying, “The leads have some so-so jokes they don’t do much with, and their characters are bland.”

Bilge Ebiri of New York Magazine/Vulture noted that while Ritchie’s visual style remains, “his characters feel dead on arrival.” Meanwhile, Frank Scheck of The Hollywood Reporter gave a more mixed response, saying the film is easy to watch but may suffer from heavy editing.

Despite the negative reviews from some outlets, a few critics highlighted Eiza González as a standout performance in an otherwise uneven ensemble.

With its split reception between critics and audiences, In the Grey is shaping up to be one of Guy Ritchie’s more controversial recent releases, even as it draws strong viewer interest worldwide.
