HBO Doubles Down on ‘House of the Dragon’ Creator Ryan Condal With New Long-Term Deal
HBO has officially extended its overall deal with Ryan Condal, the co-creator and showrunner of House of the Dragon, keeping him under contract through 2029. The move comes as the Game of Thrones prequel heads into its final stretch, with Condal expected to oversee both Season 3 and the already-planned Season 4.
Condal first signed his overall deal with HBO in 2020, when House of the Dragon was ordered straight to series. He co-created the show with George R. R. Martin, author of the A Song of Ice and Fire books that inspired Game of Thrones. Out of several prequel ideas in development at the time, House of the Dragon was the one that moved forward into production.
He initially served as co-showrunner for Season 1 before taking full control of the series from Season 2 onward. With Season 3 currently in post-production and writers already working on the fourth and final season, Condal has been deeply involved in shaping the end of the story.
HBO has already renewed House of the Dragon through Season 4, even before Season 3 has premiered. The third season is set to debut on June 21, continuing the story that has become one of HBO’s biggest recent successes.
HBO executive Casey Bloys has previously spoken positively about Condal’s work on the series. Speaking to Deadline, he praised the show’s performance and audience response, pointing to strong viewership numbers and positive critical reception.
“This has been a very successful show for us,” Bloys said.

Since its debut in 2022, House of the Dragon has become HBO Max’s most-watched current series. Its first episode set records for the platform, drawing nearly 10 million viewers on premiere night across streaming and broadcast. The series also went on to win a Golden Globe for Best Drama Series and earned major award nominations for its first season. Season 2 continued that momentum with massive streaming numbers in its first week.
Alongside House of the Dragon, Condal is also involved in another Game of Thrones spin-off for HBO titled A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, expanding his role within the franchise even further.
Before joining HBO, Condal worked in both television and film. He co-created and ran the sci-fi series Colony for three seasons on USA Network and also wrote the screenplay for Hercules starring Dwayne Johnson, as well as co-writing the action film Rampage.
With this new deal extension, HBO is signaling strong confidence in Condal as it continues to build out the future of the Game of Thrones universe, even as House of the Dragon moves toward its planned conclusion.
